Mugmutt - scenery angst
Boris’s eyes shot open. He slowly sat up and looked around. The place was completely empty; there were only trees surrounding him in every direction. He didn’t remember how he had gotten there. For some reason, Boris felt anxious and nervous. He got to his feet and started walking. At first, he moved slowly, but before long, he began to feel countless eyes watching him. He couldn’t see anyone, but he could feel them.
Then he heard a whisper right beside his ear.
"..."
Boris giró la cabeza rápidamente. Nada Solo árboles
Otro susurro provino del otro lado
He couldn’t make out the words. The voices were distorted, barely audible, as if someone were trying to speak to him from very far away. Boris quickened his pace. More voices began to surround him, some coming from behind, others from the trees around him. He didn’t even realize when the Blot monsters had started following him. Their dark silhouettes moved between the trees, slowly drawing closer.
Boris ran.
He stumbled over a root and fell to the ground, but immediately forced himself back up. He was scared. The voices grew louder and louder, but he still couldn’t understand what they were saying. He kept running until, finally, he made it out of the forest.
Sunlight suddenly hit his face, forcing him to shut his eyes. When he opened them again, he was standing in a park. It was peaceful. Too peaceful.
A fountain stood in the middle of the park, and Boris stared at it for a few moments. Something about it caught his attention. Slowly, he approached. Without knowing why, he let his body guide him toward the fountain. He knelt down and placed one hand beneath the water, staring at it intently.
For a moment, he could have sworn the water had turned a dark, almost blackish red
He blinked.
The water was normal again.
— Hey, Boris!—
Boris suddenly looked up.
— Mugman...?—
Mugman was standing there. Boris hadn’t even noticed him approaching. He was smiling. A calm smile. Almost too calm
— Where are the others?—
Mugman didn’t answer. He simply took Boris’s hand. His smile didn’t fade; if anything, it seemed to grow slightly wider. Then he took Boris’s other hand and pulled him closer.
— What...?—
Mugman started moving. He took one step to the side and then another. Boris barely had time to react before he found himself following Mugman’s movements. Mugman spun around, taking Boris with him. Boris stumbled through the first turn, but little by little, their movements began to fall into sync, as if they had been dancing together for years.
Somewhere, music began to play. Boris had no idea where it was coming from. There were no musicians, no speakers, nothing. The music was simply there. A cheerful, light jazz tune filled the park.
Mugman moved with an almost playful energy. He stepped forward, making Boris step back, then spun around and gently pulled him into another turn. Their hands intertwined and separated as they moved through the park.
Boris began to smile.
For a few moments, he forgot about the forest, forgot about the others, and forgot why he was even there. There was only the music and the strange dance he was sharing with Mugman.
Mugman took one of his hands and spun him around again. Boris followed the movement, and when he turned back toward him, Mugman slipped underneath his arm. They switched positions in one quick, perfectly synchronized movement.
Boris let out a small laugh.
He couldn’t remember the last time he had felt this peaceful.
Mugman stepped closer and made one final turn. Boris caught him by the waist and, using the momentum, dipped him backward. Mugman was suspended in his arms, their faces only inches apart.
The music continued.
Everything seemed perfect.
Until it wasn’t.
The sky changed. The blue disappeared as if someone had spilled ink across it, turning it a deep, unnatural red. The music stopped. Boris remained frozen. His smile slowly disappeared as he turned his head toward the fountain.
The water was no longer clear.
It was red.
A dark, thick liquid spilled over the edges.
Boris looked up at the sky, then back at the water.
Everything was red.
And then he realized something.
He was still holding Mugman.
But they were no longer dancing.
Boris was on his knees. His arms were trembling, and his breathing had become heavy. His fur felt wet.
Slowly, he looked down.
And saw him.
Mugman’s body lay broken in his arms. His porcelain arms were completely shattered, as if something had brutally crushed them. Cracks covered his body, and tiny pieces of porcelain slowly fell away.
Boris froze.
He looked down at his own hands.
They were covered in that dark, reddish substance.
Blood.
His fingers began to tremble. He looked back at Mugman’s face. His eyes were open, but they were completely empty.
He wasn’t breathing.
— Mugman...— Boris whispered, barely able to get the word out.
He pulled him closer against his chest, tears beginning to form in his eyes.
Then the whispers returned.
At first, they were barely audible.
— What did you do to him, Boris?—
Boris froze.
— What did you do to him, Boris?—
The voice grew louder.
— WHAT DID YOU DO, BORIS?!—
Boris squeezed his eyes shut.
— No...—
— BORIS—
— No...—
— BORIS—
— No!—
The voices began to multiply.
— BORIS—
— BORIS —
— BORIS—
They became louder, sharper, more unbearable. Boris grabbed his head with both hands, but he couldn’t silence them. They were inside his head.
— WHAT DID YOU DO TO HIM?!—
Boris clenched his teeth as tears finally began to fall.
— I didn't...!—
But the voice interrupted him.
— BORIS—
And then everything went dark.
...
...
...
— BORIS!—
Bendy shouted as he shook Boris awake.
— GET UP, YOU SILLY DOG!—
Boris jolted awake.
— Huh...?—
He looked around, still disoriented. A shiver ran down his spine. He ignored Bendy, his eyes fixed on his own hands.
They were clean.
There was no blood. No broken porcelain. Nothing.
Just his trembling hands.
— Boris, are you okay?—
Bendy placed a hand on his brother’s shoulder.
— Yeah, I... I'm fine —
Boris finally answered, although even he didn’t sound completely convinced.
— I just had a bad dream—
