Brushing the bits of snow that had accumulated on his shoulders from his short walk off the bus to the hospital, Kousei followed the familiar path to her room. He was careful with the bags in his hands, trying not to jostle them, lest he break the glass inside.
Since it was Christmas, and he knew that Kaori was someone who adored the holiday, Kousie wanted to help bring the Christmas spirit to her hospital room. He’d seen how the drab interior had begun to get to the usually vibrant girl.
Having previously asked permission, he quickly entered her room, glad to see that she was fast asleep. Placing the bags near the door, he quickly crossed the room, standing at the side of her bed. Her hair had spread out around her head, and with the setting sun’s light entering the room through the space between the curtains, she looked ethereal, like a beautiful autumn spirit.
He walked back to the bag, wanting to get this part done quickly, lest she wake up. Rummaging through it, he found the simple Christmas lights he’d bought and set about the task of stringing them up.
He hummed as he moved around the room, putting the lights up, then pulling the tiny Christmas tree he’d bought and began decorating it. A soft smile rested on his lips as he worked, though his eyes glanced back towards Kaori frequently, sadness shining through as she had to spend the holidays in this room instead of at home.
