IDK for some reason in the latest EQG stuff they made male versions of rarijack for them to crush on, it seems like some kind of running gag at this point, they totally acknowledge the ship but keep playing around it shamelessly and turning it straight. McClain is the placeholder name given to Lance as he is seen in Voltron Legendary Defender by fans. It was given to Lance in the English dub of the anime Golion. He has no canon surname in VLD; they have given him this probably because they didn’t want to sound racist by giving him a Latinx surname (which i’ll get into).
He is, however, canonically Cuban, and deserves a Cuban surname. Lance is Cuban. As far as we’ve been told, he is not bi-racial, he is just Cuban.
“But Sammy,” one might say, “that picture of Lance’s family in the mind meld showed white people!”
Maybe, but probably not. There are such things as light skinned, pale Latinx people. They might have a caucasian complexion but that doesn’t mean they’re white.
“Okay, but why such a stink about McClain? It’s just a headcanon.”
Right you are, Random Citizen, but it all boils down to representation. Lance is Cuban. He’s not white, why give him a white surname? Give him a Cuban one! POC, Latinx and Cuban peoples especially, are always whitewashed by the media and even by the fanbase. When they are represented, they’re pigeonholed and stereotyped with “la chancla” and “si si si te amo papi!!” in fanfics. Misrepresentation is just as damaging as whitewashing.
Circling back to folks not giving him a Cuban last name for fear that it’s racist. “But Diaz and Gonzalez are super common names! That’s racist!” Taking memes and piloting them as Cuban culture is racist (are you telling me you couldn’t figure out literally any part of Cuban culture to incorporate into what you wanna do aside from la chancla?) Lance Diaz, Lance Gonzalez, Lance Alvarez - not racist. If you think Diaz is too common a last name - if you think it’s the “Smith” of Latinx culture, then I’m just wondering why you don’t think any character ever named Smith is a stereotype. Baker, Smith, Williams - they’re all very common white surnames but they’re not racist. Diaz, Gonzalez, Alvarez - they’re all common Cuban names and using them on a Cuban character isn’t racist.

i personally stole bobbie’s hc for lance being an acronym for Leandro Alejandro Núñez Cuesta Espinosa bc it’s fucking adorable.
