WHY ARE YAMS SUCH A BIG DEAL I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. Like, I'm only on chapter five and all I know is that yams are the most important thing in this town, and he hangs himself over them. WHAT IS THIS MADNESS.
it's basically their entire livelihood. he kills himself when he realizes he can't fight the change to his culture that the missionaries brought. he based his entire life around being manly, basically being obsessed with it, and he offs himself when he's lost what he's always perceived as manliness (he's useless, cowardly, and he can't control his environment)
there that's things fall apart for you
(don't complain i'm annotating a weird instructional essay on dumpster diving and two pieces by thoreau this weekend AP 11 is suffering)
