Characterization Meme: Sai or Yamato! (or both, both is good) Because i', really curious ;)

Pick a character and I will give and explain the top five ideas/concepts/etc I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to accurately depicting them!

These boys are more difficult but it’s Worth It. I’ll do both!

Yams, Tenzou, or Plantman, also known as the One With Too Many Names

1. The only sane man.I think this is how Yamato often sees himself, particularly within the context of team seven. During missions, he is less emotionally driven than any of his teammates, Kakashi and Sai included, so there’s often a part of him that’s somewhat exasperated by their sentimentality and occasional silliness. At the same time, he also kind of admires it.

2. Looking in through a window. I think Yamato often sees himself as someone who’s just on the outskirts of society, looking in. He’s never experienced anything close to normalcy: he doesn’t remember his parents, he was a scientific experiment the first half of his childhood and a tool for the second half, and his adult life has been spent in service of people he barely even knows. He’s ANBU through and through. He didn’t used to mind this until he became part of team seven and he began to learn what else was possible.

3. Legacy.I think he takes having Mokuton rather seriously. There’s always a part of him that wants to live up to the first Hokage’s legacy, even when almost no one around him knows about or acknowledges the connection.

4. Playball of fate.Ties in how he views himself. Yamato’s entire life was decided by the fact that a psychopath kidnapped him when he was an infant and he was the only child lucky enough to survive the process. Then Danzou took interest in him, and he only got away because of Kakashi’s almost accidental interference. Cue the Fourth Shinobi War, and, well… Poor guy. Taking charge by being in ANBU and a commanding officer is very important to him because of it. 

5. Kakashi.Whenever I write him with Kakashi, I keep in mind that he’s always just a little bit in love with his senpai. To what degree really depends on his age and your interpretation, but I feel like this is an infatuation that never quite leaves him and that makes it more difficult for him to say no to foolhardy plans and half-baked schemes because Senpai Always Knows What To Do. Even when he obviously doesn’t.

Sai

1. Learning.Sai is an avid student who enjoys learning new things. Take his dedication to understand social interaction, for example – he enjoys gathering new knowledge and implementing it immediately to see whether it’s effective. He would probably make a good scientist.

2. Observant.Because he’s never quite the center of whatever social interaction is going on, he has the opportunity to look at it from an outside perspective and draw his own conclusions. He’s a perceptive guy despite his lack of social skills, and goes straight for the throat when he confronts other people with their emotions. It’s a lethal combination. This also fits in with his artistic side, as ultimately drawing is all about observation, to see what something really looks like rather than what you think it looks like.

3. Craving company.Sai is an introvert, but one who still enjoys and often craves social interaction and having strong bonds. His relationships are incredibly important to him, so he works hard at maintaining them.

4. Putting up a fake smile.Due to his lacking social skills, desire to maintain relationships and ROOT conditioning, Sai rarely opens up about his true feelings. Any disaster short of someone he cares about dying doesn’t warrant much more than an awkward smile and a “I’m fine”. This is a Questionable Method.

5. Loyalty.Oh boy, here we go again. Unlike Minato or Itachi, though, his loyalty is more towards specific people than the village as a whole. He starts out feeling loyal to his brother and Danzou, then team seven, and eventually Ino. It’s quite interesting to see how he treats people who he feels aren’t right for his loved ones (read: sasuke towards team 7. Sai never fully understood Naruto’s commitment on that front). It’s difficult to gain his loyalty, but once you have you have a defender for life.

I just wanted to thank you for your Punisher review! I started watching it because of it and I liked it a lot! The beginning was a bit slow, but the further I got the more invested I became. It was a bit bloody, but I liked how Frank didn't walk away from fights unarmed. I always find that unrealistic. I really liked how Frank and Lieberman became reluctant friends + basically every scene with Frank and kids. But curse you Billy! That flashback in the last episode! Anyway, thanks for the rec! <3

The beginning took its time a bit, but the entire thing developed nicely into something to care about and for. Frank and the kids were <3333

Yamato: just how much I would enjoy it and how effortlessly the ANBU agents would take to it. After everything that happened, I was unsure whether people would want me for the job. I knew I was qualified to lead, but I'd never led an organization of this scale. But the previous commander died in the war, and senpai wanted someone he could fully trust in the job. I'm pleased to say that person was me. I'm even more pleased to say my agents show me every bit as much respect as they showed my predecessor. It's a good feeling.
