Hello, hope this doesn't like a bunch of weird, random questions, but how much did kangaroo leather cost? Since you said it was thinner, how strong is it compared to other varieties of leather? How difficult was it to sew, needle-breaking included? Your cosplay seems to be coming along wonderfully, by the way! I can't wait to see the finished product!
I bought the kangaroo leather off of eBay. The listing is here, and it has quite a lot of info. I'd buy from them again, but I think I'd ask if they could send the skin rolled in a tube rather than folded and flattened in a parcel bag cos it means you have to iron out the creases from the folding, which you can do. I'm just lazy!
I guess I consider it thinner to most suede I've come across, but perhaps I'm just not very experienced with the types of hides that you can get. I was hesitant to look outside Australia for a supplier since we have quite strict quarantine rules and I don't know what the laws are surrounding the import of animal hides.
Machine sewing it didn't seem like much of a problem, but when it came to triple or quadruple layers of the hide, the machine had difficulty running it under the needle. I had the same issues with the furniture vinyl I made the Pyro suit out of.
Handsewing wasn't such a problem when there was a single layer but it got exponentially difficult with each additional layer. Likely if you had a good leather needle and thimble it'd be OK, but it does require a bit of oomph to get the point through to the other side sometimes. Consequently I have a nice puncture mark on the pad of my thumb. You might need to be careful you don't use too bulky a needle otherwise the needle holes may remain visible. Not sure.
