Jen Ervin, Sky Swim, The Arc, Summer 2018
NEW INTERVIEW on InFrame.fr
Kalel Kovel: Can you share with us a little about the project’s development?
Jen Ervin: The project’s meaning developed over time. It began with a desire to document moments and expanded into the challenge of capturing something less personal, more universal. Ark Lodge is a place I’ve returned to over and over again for many years. The project evolved in response to countless discoveries of how the light changed through the seasons. Time was central to my creative process, but I wasn’t living by time, but rather in consideration of the land, my family and my inner state of being.
A lovely write-up about ‘The Arc’ book today on Feature Shoot. Thank you, Ellyn Kail. (Link in profile) @featureshoot #thearcbook @aintbad .
. No photograph lasts forever, but these tiny pictures seem particularly precious and fleeting. More than once, I’ve found myself half-consciously opening its pages–just to make sure they’re still there. —Ellyn Kail
Camouflage, is one of the first polaroids I made back in 2012 at the onset of my series, The Arc. On a walk with my young daughter in the woods near our cabin, we stopped at this beautiful spot to make a portrait. Adjusting myself and my camera to the scene, luck (disguised as mosquitoes) intervened causing my daughter to spontaneously bow in surrender. The air was so heavy, it glued her hair to her back in a fern-like pattern, echoing the rhythm of wild greenery. I remember feeling an incredible sense of communion behind the lens at the time of capture and a rush of awe minutes later as I peeled the film apart. It was an important moment for me in the development of the series, to remember to always leave room for chance. ....
