I think I'm going to write an essay on ego as an artist, particularly an artist making theatre. Here's what I think: if you want to make heaps of money, you need to be reasonably capable and have a huge ego. If you want to have an interesting and lengthy and meaningful career, you need to try to kill your ego as much as you can.*
*for those of us raised on a diet of shame, this doesn't totally apply. I'll talk about it in the essay.
George Bernard Shaw was an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist and political activist born in 1856. He wrote over sixty plays inducing ‘Man and Superman’, ‘The Perfect Wagnerite’, ‘An Unsocial Socialist’, ‘Pygmalion’ and ‘Saint Joan’ and won a Nobel price for literature in 1925. He grew up in a household with tremendous financial struggles and lived most of his life in poverty.
Influenced by Henrik Ibsen, he seeked to introduce a new realism into English language drama, using his plays as a means to spread his political, social and religious ideas.Bernard Shaw had a tremendous influence on Western theatre, culture and politics, which extended from the 1880s to his death and beyond.
This video, published by the National Theatre, is an acting technique used within the drama curriculum. Having had some experience with acting classes, this particular exercise is one that I find really important. As it allows to the actor to analyze his role and think about multiple aspects of character that otherwise he may not have considered. Chemistry with one’s character can make a huge difference in a performance and shows that the role has been studied in depth and has been given multiple dimensions.
This video is dedicated to demonstrate how SFX makeup is used within the field of cinema and how important it is to built a character. SFX makeup is a type of makeup that revolves around prosthetics, fake blood, latex etc and is used to create creatures and transform actors into what they are portraying. I find the work of makeup artists particularly important as their contribution in a performance is critical for the quality and aesthetics of it. While it is also important for the actor’s delivery since makeup and especially SFX makeup is a great tool for an actor to get into character.
Born in 1564 in England, William Shakespeare is considered to be on of the most remarkable dramatist in the history of theatre. Shakespeare has written 37 plays and over 150 poems which have influenced both the world of theatre as well as the english language and literature. He performed his plays in the Globe theatre, and was very involved during the performances and had a very controlled act of his actors. Shakespeare was not a fan of overly exaggerated acts but preferred his actors to be more natural and realistic during their acts. Shakespeare's name is still being mentioned and relevant till this day, as he has inspired many theatre creators and writers and has had a huge influence in on the general public as well.
