BAD BRAINS - EXHIBITION NY
Meanwhile in Brooklyn NY, Director of the Black Rock Coalition Earl Douglas invited me to the art exhibition of one of my favourite bands The Bad Brains, exhibited by the lovely folks at okay player.
The socially normalised idea of ‘punk’ is stereotypically portrayed as the sole property of ‘whiteness’.
The meaning of ‘punk’ can be quite hard to define, but for me its less about musical genre and more about having a certain audacity to step outside the circumferences of what you’ve been expected to be in life. For others its about non conformty. However for most, the socially normalised idea of ‘punk’ is streotypically portrayed as the sole property of ‘whiteness’ ironically
As a child, artists like The Bad Brains, Poly Styrene X, Pure Hell and Living Color always appealed to my inner mis-fit and despite what mainstream media perpetuated, served as a powerful reminder that black culture has never been monolithic.
Despite what mainstream media perpetuated.. black culture has never been monolithic.
“Who's gonna tell the youth about the drugs. About the drugs, mugs, bugs, and the police thugs” - Bad Brains (I Against I)
As one of the most seminal African-American punk bands of all time, currently exhibited at New York’s Okay Gallery - Banned in Babylon: The Art and Culture of Bad Brains features photography by Pulitzer Prize-winning photo journalist Lucian Perkins. It also exhibits stunning paintings by Bad Brains bassist Darryl Jenifer, rare black and white flyers, posters, records aswell as pieces by street artist Shepard Fairey - with archival photography by superfan John Mousheghian, and Jeannie "Aunt Jean" Pawlowski (who has been photographing Bad Brains since 1981)
Make it your mission to visit The Bad Brains exhibition currently showing in - Brooklyn, New York.
