A visual interpretation of the song The Carny by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
The night time is the right time w/ fab photographer Robert Ascroft 📷 #Repost @robertascroft Flash back to last years shoot of Kid Congo Powers on the streets of Dumbo. The band was in town for a show and staying at our place in dumbo. One of the band members was not able to make it so they were rehearsing as a 3 piece. As the hours passed and they continued rehearsal late into the early morning hours I thought it may not happen... just when I was going to head off to bed the guys arrived. I shot this pic at about 3:30 am and still made it to jfk for my 7am flight. Some shoots are worth pulling an all nighter. #thegunclub #thecramps #thepinkmonkeybirds #solocholo #kidcongopowers #thebadseeds #nickcave #dancinginthestreets
ROCK AND ROLL SUICIDE – NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS BATTLE WITH THE BLUES
My book Darker With The Dawn explores the musical universe of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, from The Birthday Party to Ghosteen and beyond.
The book will be reissued as a paperback edition and an audiobook in early 2026!
Here you can read a short extract from the book, investigating Cave’s complex relationship with the blues on his mission to reinvent rock and roll – through the stormy weather of ‘Tupelo’.
If anyone would like a SIGNED copy in time for Xmas please reach out to me through my site.

Digital Ghosts in the Machine: Cave's Faustian Dance with AI
Forty years after "Tupelo" first erupted from speakers like biblical thunder, Nick Cave finds himself wrestling with digital demons. The Bad Seeds' anniversary celebration arrives wrapped in artificial intelligence—a technology that promises to bring creator and vision closer while potentially erasing the creator entirely.
Andrew Dominik, Cave's longtime collaborator, presents the AI-generated "Tupelo" video with characteristic bluntness: "Jesus, suspend your fucking prejudices and take a look!" The result softens Cave's initial skepticism, and who could blame him? The technology offers artists a seductive shortcut to subconscious vision, removing intermediate steps between imagination and manifestation.
Cave's response through the Red Hand Files reveals the tension. He advocates remaining "flexible and humble enough to adjust our views as new evidence emerges," even when uncomfortable. The irony cuts deep—Cave uses direct fan communication to discuss technology that could eliminate the need for artists altogether.
The video itself embodies the uncanny valley's deepest fears. Static images bulge and distort in horrible simulacra of human movement. Apocalyptic weather sequences ring false, subpar to traditional effects. Elvis Presley's digital marionetting becomes mawkish, occasionally laughable. What should be celebration becomes cautionary tale.
Beyond aesthetic concerns lurk existential threats. Generative AI's environmental impact grows exponentially, demanding finite resources while the planet burns. From artistic perspectives, the threat looms larger: when does a "tool" stop serving vision and start eclipsing the visionary? If AI can replicate Dominik's style, why need Dominik? If it can generate Cave's lyrics and performances, why need Cave?
The Blogging Goth's author acknowledges their own complicity—AI enhanced their band's video, though they agonized over minimal involvement. This confession illuminates the broader dilemma: creators using tools that could replace them within a generation.
The lie we've been sold promises AI will handle labor so humans can pursue creativity. Instead, it colonizes creativity itself, leaving humans to handle the mundane while machines generate art. Soon, seeking human-made content may become niche hobby, like vinyl collecting—a deliberate choice to support unaugmented creation.
Cave's "Tupelo" anniversary becomes inadvertent prophecy. The song's biblical apocalypse finds new form in digital revelation, where the end comes through silicon rather than sulfur. In embracing AI's seductive efficiency, we risk losing the very humanity that makes art meaningful.
The big black cloud has indeed come—and it's made of data.
