Well, last night I had a date with a guy named David. The night started out disastrously (being a little dramatic) because instead of making sure I left the house on time to get to Ohio City in time, I was obsessing over my outfit and underpinnings, which is another story for another blog. I left my house in a mad dash to get to W. 25th before my date thought that I was bailing on him, but in hindsight, since we were both coming from the Eastside relatively close to each other, we probably should have gone together. Whatever.
So, anyways, half way down Kinsman I reached into my bag to find my phone and check the time and realized I'd left it at home in my confused frenzy to switch purses and grab my heels which I didn't even end up wearing anyway. That's all to say I was late, and instead of being able to text him to let him know that I wouldn't be there, I had to hope to god I wasn't too late and that he didn't think that I had stood him up.
When I finally arrived after going about 20 over the speed limit 75% of the way there I took a couple deep breaths and made my way to The Black Pig, a restaurant I'd been dying to try since it opened a while ago.
If you aren't in the know, The Black Pig is a nice little spot on W. 25th next door to Nano Brew that serves up local fair with a healthy dose of pig on the menu if the name hadn't given it away. The decor, like most of the OhC joints is pretty gritty hipster chic, lots of brick, reclaimed art, and hipster waiters but luckily it lacks the pretension that some of the other spots have in spades. It seems like a place that you can go and hang out and not feel like it's a scene. Plus the wait staff was attentive and super polite.
When we sat down at 6:15PM it was still happy hour. The happy hour menu is pretty good with everything being $7 dollars or less. There is a selection of half sandwiches for $3 and small plates (the fries and pasta of the day) for $5, there is also an extensive list of wines, cocktails, and beers that are $3-7. I was quite pleased because both the Pimm's Cup (a popular drink in London made with Pimm's, seltzer, and lemonade, so yummy) and French 75 were on the list of happy hour cocktails. They are two of my favorite drinks and that gave them some big points in my book.
My date, who admittedly only ever got one thing when he came here, decided to branch out and try the 3 different half sandwiches offered: a grilled cheese with Morbier and tomato, a pate melt (pun lolz), and a cubano. I got the pasta of the day which was made with a mushroom and pork belly cream sauce. IT was delicious.
Apparently my date knew the chef and he came out and said "Hello," he seemed like a really nice guy and the food was really nice too. Simple and delicious. The pasta was surprisingly light and perfectly cooked and the sandwiches were delicious.
I left happy and slightly toasted after a French 75 and a couple of Brooklyn IPAs. Luckily for The Black Pig the meal went off a well and the date. I will certainly be back for a round two.
Check it out soon, they are having a Riesling promotion where there is a pretty hefty list of great Rieslings for $10/glass $35/bottle.
