Book Review: The Blue Elephant by Ahmad Mourad الفيل الأزرق - احمد مراد

It might be one of the most talked about Best Selling novels in Egypt in 2013, then the sales boost up again when people knew that “ The Blue Elephant” is in the filmmaking process.

Ahmad Mourad achieved a rapid popularity after his novel “Vertigo” which was made into a TV series that hasn’t achieved half the success of the actual book, yet with a smart equation Ahmad Mourad created some sort of vortex to a large number of readers that made them hungry for more, the blue elephant is actually considered one of his best work.

One of the reasons of success lays within Mourad’s access to one of the most exciting fields of writing which is mystery and suspense, no doubt a lot tried to conquer that tough part of literature, some managed others didn’t, but Mourad did a remarkable job venturing through leaving his fingerprint that significantly point only to him, which I believe was the key of success to “The Blue Elephant” because simply the incidents or the structure even the ending is a bit of an old theme in mystery and suspense, the story didn’t add much yet what made it attractive is the way of telling the story which hints to a good effort and personal talent.

“The Blue Elephant” tells the story of a psychiatrist who was struggling with the death of his wife & kid in a car accident to make it in life, hooked up on alcohol, hash & tobacco, “Yahya” (the main character) forced to get back to his work in Al-Abaysa Hospital to the 8-west wing, just to find an old friend of him is accused of murder and he has to do psycho-analysis for his case wither he was sane during the time of murder or not, then things take unexpected turn. “Yahya” gets to meet people from his past, discover new things about himself, & open closed door he thought he wouldn’t go there anymore, with an obvious metaphysical & psychological twist Mourad’s take us in a journey inside the world of “Yahya”. The title is attractive yet I wouldn’t explain what is “The Blue Elephant” because while reading the joy was while losing yourself between the pages you are always wondering what in the world is the “Blue Elephant” and what does it got to do with what is going on? Well, you gonna have to read to know

What I didn’t like about “The Blue Elephant” which is not a deal breaker yet it was a bit a throw off, is how I got the feeling it was written as a screenplay not a novel, it shows obviously in the descriptions & the dialogue also with the jumps between situation,  also the extreme wordiness in some inner dialogues or situations somehow prevents the reader from building his own visual take on what is going on.

Overall, Ahmad Mourad’s “The Blue Elephant” still worth reading, though I was waiting for a stronger_out of the box_ kind of ending , yet it will keep you entertained, and to be honest a lot are waiting to see how would it look on the silver screen.
