House Party Jam and Video Shoot
Last Saturday, I was clued into this party. Bilal texted me the flyer and I'm not going to lie, I was SUPER stoked. MC Playdough is one of my favorite local MC's, and it had been quite a while since I had been to a "House Party". I've heard of Casa de Legend, met the owner at my last show, and lets say the reputation preceded.
The flyer had made it to Facebook (which I DID NOT share, I like to keep some good stuff on the DL. Selfish I know), it was getting a lot of buzz... People from Dallas and Fort Worth were going to meet in the middle for one night of Hip Hop. Nothing short of amazing was to be expected.
Me and my girl, Ariel, arrived about 10:30p and the house was already packed. D. Teknics and Bilal were on the turntables. Other than that there was a sea of faces I didn't know. Kind of a first in a while. Right off the bat, someone goes, "Callie Dee! I just want you to know I love what you're doing for Hip Hop right now." That's how you start your night. I'm always humbled and very gracious for those types of meetings. People kept piling in, and more familiar faces joined. Anyone who's anyone in the Hip Hop scene was in attendance.
The Bodega Brovas took the floor and put on one heck of a show. They joked with the crowd, interacted, hyped us, and smashed a good 30 minute set. There was not a still body in the place. Everyone had their hands in the air (except for under the fan, ha), bobbing their head, shaking their butts, filming and taking pictures. DJ Nero, took over the tunes after the set, and he has been put on my roster of DJ's to have out. The tracks he dropped were some of my all time favorites, including "Hay" by Crucial Conflict. I have NEVER heard a DJ play that. Props.
Then Playdough took the floor. My girl pulled me to the front by her. I LOVE being up close and personal during a performance. However, this was a video shoot and the idea of being on film makes me nervous. But whatevs, I tried to enjoy myself anyways. The chemistry between Sean P and Playdough makes for an outstanding performance. They even played a joke on the audience faking a blown speaker. Playdough performed a few new songs, a few old songs, took a poll of what area code everyone was from. When it got to 469, he goes, "Who invited you? 469 was not invited..." jokes. At the end, he did a circle of "What's your name" and freestyled on it. I'll be honest, I tried to find an escape route...but the place was packed....it came close to my turn and I guess Playdough could see the terror in my eyes because he goes, "Don't freak out, it's ok." Ha. I said my name, he spit a verse and moved on. Later he approached me and said, "It's all fun, I understand I'd freak out too." For someone who appears to be very extroverted and confident...when it's all eyes on me, I'm a deer in headlights. Playdough was very friendly and a great host.
DJ Sober took the wheels of steel and Bboys/Bgirls started busting some moves. There was a promo shoot in the garage. I had some great conversations, bought a Bodega Brovas shirt. The Police came and left with no one in handcuffs (first time for that at a house party!). Even though I talked about business and "what I do" I tried really hard not to bring up the shows or talk too much shop. I was there to enjoy myself, not to promote.
The vibe of the entire evening was welcoming and full of love. Everyone had an amazing time, smiles on all the faces. It felt like a huge family.
2am rolled around and I wasn't ready to leave. But I wake up early and Red Goose was the next day so I had to call it a night.
Nights like this make me honored to be a part of the Hip Hop scene. Not only do I get to enjoy parties like this but I get to work with extremely talented people full of love. By all accounts, the guys performing and most of the people in attendance had every right to project huge egos. But they didn't. They were down to earth, personable, and just amazing people. Thank you to Playdough, Bodega Brovas, Topic, Sean P, D. Teknics, Bilal, DJ Sober and DJ Nero for an amazing show! Thanks you, Cesar for inviting us to your house, and everyone who showed for being one of the cool cats in the metroplex ;)
