On Popularity and Authenticity

This is a long post, but I'd like everyone, especially new followers, to read it. Hi. I'm writing this because I can't sleep, and because @lawjournalsandwine just followed me. It served as a bit of a wake up call, to remind me what this blog's about.

I started this blog to profile my educational experience, but as it turns out, at the moment most of that experience is both too mundane and too fast-paced to warrant a mention here.

Everyone's taking wonderful, artistic photos of their notebooks, but I don't even have any notes, and if I did, they're just crappy bullet points in a boring OneNote page. That's not very easy to the eye. My life doesn't generate the kind of 'aesthetic' content that goes big on the studyblr circuit.

So what the hell am I doing here? What do I get out of my educational experience? I enjoy English because it allows me (most of the time) to study great works of literature, and write with authenticity about how we as people and I as an individual relate to texts. I enjoy History because it allows me to think globally about how people relate to events and how events shape our world. I enjoyed Film last year (not offered at Y11) because it gave me a chance to express myself creatively and with authenticity through my absolute favourite medium.

What else do I enjoy? I don't know, there's more, but I can't think of them at the moment. Don't get me wrong, I have no desire to leave my current school, but I'm wondering how it all relates to this blog. And it doesn't. Everyone has a passion, and this blog isn't mine. I love it to bits, but it's not what I'm here for.

So as of today, this blog will turn into a space where it doesn't matter if I don't post for a month. It will turn into a space where I can put out stuff that I make and that I like, even if it has nothing to do with school.

I’m working on a film, a zine, and an event. They’ll be amazing.

This song has helped me think about why I act, why I work for others. Is it for them, or is it for me? I don’t know. What do you think.

Ever since I’ve been learning about my privilege, and about the new ways in which we as a culture think about feminism, I’ve stopped using Post and Tweet, and started using Repost and Retweet. It’s not my place to chip in my two cents on an issue that I’m not directly affected by, but it is my place to amplify the voices of those that are directly affected.

What do you think? What is the place of white people in racial discussions? What is the place of cis people in discussions of trans issues? What is the place of men in feminist discussions? Should any of these groups have a place in any of these discussions, or are these important dialogues best left to those that are directly affected?

It’s time for some real talk.

This blog cannot sustain itself. You may have noticed that over the last month or so, my output has dipped. This is because I’ve been back at school, and I haven’t had time to write or queue posts. I’ve been working (on homework and projects) until 11p.m. most nights, and I get up at six. This leaves me with little sleep and little time to blog. So, bereft of an author, this blog lays dormant.

I don’t want to let this blog die. I still want to keep posting and producing content. I don’t have the time to produce seven full-length original posts every week. I don’t want to limit myself to that and not put out content that I do want to put out. I also don't want to hold myself to that and put out content that I’ve produced under pressure.

So, here’s the deal from here on in. In exchange for your patronage, I will promise you regular content. There may be a lot of reblogs, and there’ll be a lot more aesthetic stuff, but when the good stuff comes, it’ll be good. There will be no schedules. Some days you’ll see a dozen posts, others you’ll see only one.

This is the approach I’m taking across all my platforms. Unless it’s urgent, it’ll come when it’s done, and when it’s done, it’ll be amazing.

I’m going to keep on sharing culture and music and amazing experiences with you and the rest of the world. There’ll be some amazing study tips and school advice somewhere in there somewhere too. And after it all, we all will have had some fun.

I’ve only just discovered Dan Bull’s album with Beit Nun. It’s really chill, but the lyrics are really intense. I’ve been listening to Dan’s stuff for a while, but I’ve only paid much attention to his gaming raps. Current task is taking a trip through his entire discography. Catch y’all on the flip side.
