Her toes are dangling just below the water’s surface as it laps beneath the pier. District Four had recovered well from the revolution, its laid back nature had made for an easy transition. For the Mutt, however, being released back into the public had been a great stride but an awful reminder of just what the Capitol was capable of. Finnick had won yet at night she could hear the cries of his widowed bride just down the street. Her family had stayed out of the Rebellion as best they could yet they’d all been killed to “teach lessons” to those who were a part of it. 

The world was different and she didn’t know how to fit into it anymore. 

Steps from behind her brought the Mutt’s gaze up over her shoulder, “I’m sorry. Is this your dock? I didn’t mean to intrude.”

Firearms training

She didn’t know why she allowed herself to help train firearms to new members of the district 13′s forces. Could be because she was the best shot they had, it wasn’t that hard to teach someone the basics, but aiming a rifle for a shot like the ones she’s known to take took finesse. This boy was actually respectful and he could probably last longer than half of these recruits. She nodded and looked at his gun. “First lesson is know your gun like an extension of you, and by that will be learning the parts and how it works. A little more complicated than point than shoot. It has to be when you are a marksman like me.”

The water had soaked her clothes and was sticking to her skin, the way her hair had around her face. She stepped in, shivering. What happened was a good question, she didn’t know what exactly happened. Maybe it was because she couldn’t stand her house anymore, she couldn’t stand being alone in silence.

The truth was; she missed him. She missed Finnick so much, but he was gone and so she needed to learn to live with it. She didn’t think things would be taken away from them so quickly— no one ever really does, it just happens. She didn’t have him to take care of her, so she went to someone she trusted.

“I couldn’t sleep,” she admitted to him, her voice soft. Tired. It was one of those nights where she knew she wouldn’t be able to fall asleep, the little things Finnick and her shared would come to haunt her. “I didn’t want to be alone.”

It was easier to tell him the truth than to lie, especially when she’d come to him for help. Lying would make things harder, she’d have to keep what she felt hidden inside.  Hiding was no longer an option, she had no one to hide from.

  Kieran still wasn’t used to saying goodbye to fallen friends of the war.

  Even several months after the war, after everything that happened, the deaths of his friends were still fresh on his mind. The memory book he and Peeta created helped remember them, but Kieran still wanted to do more. He just didn’t know what to do. Peeta baked a loaf of bread and picked just one primrose for Kieran to take to Annie, and here he was.

   Kieran and Annie talked. They exchanged a few smiles, and Kieran watched the baby boy cradled in her arms. But the moment Annie mentioned Finnick, long pauses were shared between them. Kieran felt his eyes, probably Annie’s too, on the flower pot of the single primrose. They shared this now, the death of someone they loved. Kieran tried to share his own memories of Finnick, but he found the words hard to say, long pauses easier, and then silence comforting.

   He left her home soon after, planning on visiting his mother in Four, when he suddenly wondered -- staring at the other victor homes -- of the 73rd Hunger Games victor. He remembered, Poseidon Bertram. Finnick must have mentored him. Kieran wouldn’t usually care, but wondered if he was still here. He turned back, searching for him. Other than Annie, he was the only District 4 victor still alive. And maybe, the only other person here who knew Finnick.

It wasn’t important. It didn’t matter. Yes she hadbruises but it wasn’t anyone else’s business what had happened. To Annie itfelt like prying, if she wanted to talk about it then she would. But it didn’tfeel like a topic of conversation she would enjoy. She hadn’t meant to get the bruises in the first place.

“It doesn’t matter. They aren’t even that bad.”
