The Burning Peppermints
The Burning Peppermints are a duo of high school seniors that began, like many 2000's era teens, as a White Stripes cover band. Having previously been in other bands, such as the self admitted ill named Thamaturgy, the duo sat down to a jam session turned vision. Jake Witing explains "someone left a drum set at my house and we thought let's play". Breely Flower, anointed with a name only rock gods could ordain, fatefully sat down at the drums as the two began playing and quickly became enamored.
Since the initial formation, this duo have grown from local high school talent show winners to developing their craft with music lessons and song writing. Included in that growth, has been an expansion of their musical influences. Newly inspired by the likes of The Kinks and The Animals, The Burning Peppermints are moving toward a minimalist garage pop rock sound. In doing so, they are trading in their high school threads in exchange for a more formal clean cut stage image. They also trade in the duo to include "The Mystery Band", being a rotating membership of varying players ranging from Bass to keyboards.
Jake and Breely are a duo that are unafraid to admit that their image, music and performance are a full investment. They don't discount any portion of the process from artwork to song content. The musical formation however remains unplanned and is normally a byproduct of casual band playing.
The growth of the duo since their formation and the dedicated nature of these high school seniors is evident in their live shows. Playing in venues across Birmingham from Zydeco to Bottletree, they are maturing and developing right here in our local music scene.
The duo recorded all of their previous music material and current Tape Demos inside their Birmingham home. "Tunnel Wizard" is a single the band formulated as a submission to the Alys Stephens local songwriting challenge. The song features Breely on vocals as Jake Witing delivers the lyrical content focused on Birmingham.
LOVE
Intention and Ambition, just one conversation with Jake and Breely about their fast formation from high school kids experimenting with musical instrument to songwriters, performers, and recording artists make us feel like we wasted our high school youth!
NIX
Home recordings, as much as we appreciate the quality for a garage band we think this duo is ready for a professional recording.
Our Say
These are our youth to watch....We are watching NOW!
