1. i lived abroad! i’d never done that before. a lot of italy-related things were firsts this year.

10. yup. as per my standard clumsy self this year I accidentally damaged myself a lot. the top three: I broke my coccyx by falling down the garden steps, broke my toe in my sleep, had a mild concussion when my laptop fell off a shelf and onto my head.

20. i spent christmas with my family and my grandparents, and tbh the fact we were all together in the same place at the same time is a miracle in itself.

I saw Eileen Atkins this year play JULIET and she was amazing at it. I completely believed it and that’s a 13 year old girl. Limits are for the limited mind.

This idea is pretty much the backbone of my dissertation proposal - why is age (and indeed gender) the be all and end all for so many when it comes to casting roles. It shouldn't be. Janet Suzman made such a great point in an interview a few years back that because she's got so much life experience now, indeed acting experience now too, that it's made her a better actress - but she has no outlet for this. The roles aren't being offered to her, right at the point in her life when she feels she is now at the peak of her talent to play them.

I'm so excited to see what the reaction will be to Maxine Peake taking on Hamlet at the Manchester Exchange. One of the big roles for men being played by a woman, especially when we've got the hysteria of Cumberbatch taking on the role next year fizzing around the theatre world and beyond. I know gender-swapping isn't anything remotely new, Sarah Bernhardt was trailblazing her way through this world before Peake or even the brilliant Fiona Shaw, but Peake is doing it at a time when everyone is blithering on about Hamlet - it will be interesting to see how the critics (invariably) compare her to those who have gone before (and those yet to come). Plus we have the Donmar's all female Henry IV coming along too, with Harriet Walter in the lead.  I guess I just feel incredibly annoyed that no one's had the initiative to offer Lear to Maggie - there's proof out there that age (and I firmly believe this to be also true of gender) isn't a barrier to an audience's appreciation of a performance, that audiences are actually infinitely more capable of seeing beyond the superficial and accepting of the person on stage, regardless of age or gender, than those producing and casting would have us all believe.

In "My Old Lady" press book, released by Cohen Media last month, I. Horovitz said that M. chose his screenplay among 25 scripts that had been offered to her at that time (and also that she was the first actor to sign, not KK). Maybe I am pessimistic, but I am not sure that M. gets so many scripts...

It must be quite scary getting scripts like ‘you play an old lady, coz you’re old, then you die.’ poor thing. Also hate all the tumblr posts like ‘omg Maggie Smith is gonna die soon’ NO SHE IS NOT SHH.

I think it's a sexist thing as well as an age one - do actors get so many scripts featuring their on-screen death?!? I always get the impression that with men, Hollywood and the film industry seem much, much more willing to accept the idea that they can do more on screen and well into their 80s and 90s, but with women the roles seem limited once you hit 55, and usually end up as either doting grandmother, or dying crock. That's why it's remarkable that Meryl Streep seems to have bucked this fate - fair play to her, but more need to having her kind of career and the variety of roles she seems to be offered. One actress is not enough.

I find those death posts to be utterly tasteless and pretty vile. I actually find the ones that question "was Maggie Smith ever young?" to be the height of stupidity too. I mean of course she was young! I really don't understand why people have to be so narrow-minded when it comes to older generations and what they can do; they were young, and just because they're now over 70, it does not mean that death is bloody imminent. Death can strike at any age - and it's a pretty tasteless thing to post about forecasting when someone will die, something which I find even more galling in Maggie's case, because as we know, for a time she was indeed ill - but instead of focusing on the fact that she seems to be fully recovered and well again, and looking great, people talk about her dying. I really do want to tell those people to just "fuck off" - excuse my language.

Have you posted any Mrs Medlock? I’m sure you have but she’s the character I saw her as most as a kid.

I have, earlier this week oddly enough :) I love Mrs Medlock - she's utterly fascinating. The Secret Garden was the second film I ever saw Maggie in, and even though she was kind of scary in it (from a child's POV lol), I loved the character and wanted to know more about her (and of course the actress).
