What do you do when a world pandemic hits? Well you write about it. Problem is, I did that back in 2006 when I started writing Heirs to the Kingdom. So, what have I been doing during this pandemic of 2020? I have been writing, actually I have been writing none stop, and hopefully by Christmas, I will have completed my fourth manuscript for this year, although one of those was HTTK book eight, so I have three new stories to tell. i tell every writer I meet, who is just starting out, write about life, your life, your friends’ life, the life you see and know about, and this year that is what I have done. This year has been liberating for me, I have been free to dream, remember, and write what I like, as I am no longer stuck, in the ridged routine of a series, and have written something very different from Kingdom. I am planning a new book for next year, a HTTK related book, and I am excited to show yet another side of it, and it will be fun to create it, so hang in there, and stay safe. It has not been the easiest of years for writers, even with lockdowns worldwide, fiction writers have found themselves losing out to books on Gardening, Cooking, Crafts, and Home Improvements. All we can do is look to the future and 2021 and hope for a better year to come. For my own part, I have spent my time writing new material, and looking outside the Fantasy genre, as I create new characters, new situations, and new stories for future release. I have often heard people say that there is no such thing as magic. My reply has always been the same. I take my memories and deep feelings, and I write them into the characters I create, and they live their life within the story. Every reader sees them and experiences them differently, and paints a picture in their mind of how that character looks, or speaks, or acts. Those readers can be on different continents, miles away and have never met me or spoken to me, and yet through my character, I can share what is inside me, and make them smile, or give a deep belly laugh, sigh, or even cry. I feel one of the most important aspects of writing HTTK, was the amount of research I did whilst putting together the story. I had so many moments when I was writing something, and I would ask myself, “is that even possible?” The result of the question was a rapidly growing library of assorted books on many subjects to keep the facts accurate. History references always needed a little fudge here and little fudge there, but as long as those grey areas were thin enough, the story line was always believable and felt true to life, which after all, is the aim of a dystopian adventure.
