There were plenty of flashy cars on the Saint Leviathan campus. Most families in the church had more affluence than they knew what to do with and dolt it willingly on to their children, but Leo’s vehicle did not fit the mold. He’d bought it himself in high school after his father had reminded him callously that he “did not reward incompetence.” Still, it got the job done and tonight it would serve its purpose. After the incident at Amarna it was better to be safe than sorry and he figured the girls might feel safer showing up to the event in a car that didn’t belong to any of them.

While he waited for the girls, Leo stood outside of the car messing with his tie in the side mirror and trying to make himself look presentable. The creak of the heavy front door opening caught his attention and he straightened to face Selena and whoever else she’d brought with her. He let out a low whistle and gave them a sweet smile. “Wow. You look absolutely stunning!” He opened the door to the back seat of the car and gave an exaggerated flourish of his hand. “Please be careful not to smash your head on the roof of this lovely chariot. You guys deserve one fit for a princess, but this is a bit smaller than Cinderella’s...”

As they took off toward La Maison Danseur De Brume he looked at his passengers and gave a small smile “So, uh, what are you guys most excited for?” ‘Light-hearted’ wasn’t normally his forte but he hoped it came off natural and didn’t expose his real question ‘Are you guys nervous? Do you think things will be better this time?’

Follow the Spark || Lake Nimue

In. Out. In. Out. In. Out.

Each inhale and subsequent exhale was rhythmic and tainted; smoke billowing from pursed lips. However, instead of fading into oblivion or rising towards the orange tinted sky, this smoke lingered. It hung in the air directly in front of Violca like a ghost manifested from beyond; whispered words of Latin mixing with the magic in her blood to manipulate the abstract into something tangible. The grey smoke that once coated her lungs now took the shape of a faceless woman. Long hair cascaded down her back as she swayed, body moving slowly but with purpose as she danced along to Violca’s whispered words. Lake Nimue was her backdrop, the arctic waters bathed in the vivid orange that painted the sky as the sun began to set behind the mountains.

It was a scene so serene; a tranquil bubble manifested on the empty lake shore. It was quiet; it was a harmonious blend of dark and light; it was... too good to last.

The snapping of a twig behind her halted Violca’s enchantment, the smokey performer whisked away with the breeze, her dance incomplete. Irritation bubbled up immediately, replacing the rare calm in her veins with the customary inferno.

“Thanks for that mate. Really” she said with a shake of her head, the sarcasm dripping from her tongue just as the Latin had before. Violca took another drag, finally turning her head to view the unwelcome patron.

There were certain traditions in the world of female friendships that had no clear origin, but had cemented themselves as cornerstones of any night out in such a relationship. Holding summit in the ladies room was one of these traditions. And so the girls of Phi Phi Omega had gathered in one of the woman’s bathrooms at La Maison Danseurs de Brume, if not to make sure they were all safe given the town’s history, then to simply fix their makeup and gossip. 

Valentina was admiring the marble floors and counters, not bothering to hide it when she stopped to look at herself in the mirror. Vivienne was reapplying crimson paint to her lips, making sure nothing was out of place. As if on cue, both of the auburn haired girls turned back to their sorority sisters, mischievous smiles on their faces.

“So, Birdie, how’s your date going,” Vivienne asked with a wink, teasing in the gentlest way a Winthrop could. 

“And can we all please discuss the game plan for what we’ll do if he screws this up, because I have ideas,” Valentina added, though even she wasn’t sure if she wanted to make sure no one got away with hurting Birdie, or she just liked the idea of tormenting a frat boy. The twins looked at each other, a sense of understanding in their nearly imperceptible nod. They cared only about each other, and they saw nothing wrong with that. But they also couldn’t deny a certain fondness for each girl before them.

Billie had only just arrived in town. Mask or not, only people in the know would know who she was. The fact that she’d been circling Astarte for most of the night was a dead giveaway, but if you weren’t familiar with the Council Member and her entourage then you weren’t familiar with Billie. But really it didn’t matter to her if people knew who she was- if they didn’t, they would soon enough. She wasn’t exactly the subtle type and before the end of the night she’d probably start a fight some fights, spark a few rumors, maybe get a pretty girl or two on her hook. 

She’d been to enough shin digs in her time that the best place to scope out the crowd was the dance floor, so she’d given some excuse to Astarte about checking the perimeter- an excuse she did not believe, but nonetheless she had dismissed Billie with a roll of her eyes and a fond smile- and made her way to the tiles. It hadn’t taken her long at all to charm a few foolish folk into twirling her around and around while she laughed, always looking for someone more interesting than the last to sink her teeth into.

When Billie spotted someone on the fringe of the floor she abandoned her previous dance partner, blowing them a kiss over her shoulder as she sauntered to her new target. “Dance with me?” She asked, voice smooth as honey, holding out her hand, “I’m awful lonely, and I insist on your company.”

Beneath a New Moon

When: January 5, 2019 Where: Hawthorne Cemetery Who: Open to all

A freshly lit cigarette hung from Lavender’s lips as her heavy boots stomped down the steps of the sorority house’s front porch and away from the high pitched voices and laughter that sounded from the living room of the building. “God’s above and below.” She thought yo herself as she pulled the palms of her hands into the cozy sweater she had donned against the chill of the night. “Some of those girls can be so annoying.” A few of the pledges had pulled out their decks of tarot cards earlier in the evening and it had started out great - they were asking good questions and helping each other interpret the cards they drew. But as happens just about anytime you gather more than 1 teenage girl in a room, the practice soon fell to pieces as the girls turned their questions to more mundane and inconsequential questions and their answers more aloof until they were all bent in half with laughter. Lavender couldn’t stand it a second more and left her perch in the kitchen with her Grimoire and marched out the front door - letting it slam behind her. The girls didn’t even notice.

Smoke trailed behind Lavender as she strode down the sidewalk, leaving the echos of the girls behind her. The night was chilled and the sky was clear, stars sparkling above and no moon to dull their shimmer. Perhaps she should have done some sort of ritual for the New Moon that evening, but to be honest, Lavender just didn’t feel like it. She threw a scowl towards the heavens as she threw the butt of her cigarette on the sidewalk and stomped out the ashes. She knew Selena was going to ask how they celebrated the New Moon and while she didn’t feel like doing anything for it, she wanted even less to have to talk to Selena why she didn’t. 

With a perhaps too dramatic sigh, Lavender turned at the intersection she was in the middle of - towards the cemetery. Graveyard dirt was a powerful ingredient in many spells. Collecting it on a New Moon would just give it more and more powerful properties, right?

Once entering the cemetery, Lavender let the powers within her guide her to the best candidate for taking soil from. It was a delicate process as, for one, a spirit needed to be present within the grave and two, the spirit of the grave willing to assist the witch in their endeavors. Eyes closed, her powers lead her through the gravestones, deeper and deeper into the shadow filled cemetery. Eventually, she felt she had arrived a the place her powers were leading her and opened her eyes - the headstone she stood in front of had an illegible name, worn away with time. She bent to her knees and began reciting a mix of incantations and latin phrases to the spirit residing there. Slowly, she began to scrape soil from the surface of the grave until a footstep behind her pulled her from her task and she whipped her head around to see who - or what -else had come this far into the cemetery at a time like this.

he didn’t much like leaving the house. maybe it was because he was a bit lazy, maybe it was because it was overwhelming - but the fact still stood. he had been here a year, just about, and he still was confused by the layout. he attributed to his whole ‘not liking to leave the apartment’ thing he had going on. a casual walk would do his body some good, he thought, and so he went off on a walk. the air was crisp, and the breeze felt calming against his face. as much as he liked to coop himself up in his luxuries inside, he did appreciate the outdoors every now and then...

...until he was lost. again - he didn’t know the town as well as he figured he should, but that was his own fault. when he looked up after maybe fifteen or so minutes of walking, he realized he was completely and utterly unaware of his surroundings. it was remotely familiar, of course, he had been here before, but he wasn’t sure which way to go to return to the safety of the apartments he knew so well. luckily for him, there were a few people around who would (hopefully) give him directions. or at least, a general sense of where he was going.

sucking up the fact that he had got himself into this situation, he approached the nearest person to him. with his words, he was generally quick, direct, and to the point, and this time was no different. ❛ hey. i’m lost. wanna help me with some directions? ❜

Location: The Red Room

Status: Open

Power lies not in the loudest of voices, but in the quiet whispers that coat the night. It was that philosophy that guided Violca through the grand halls. From room to room she wandered, ears pricked to the voices that echoed and lay hidden behind mahogany doors. 

Following the whispered laugh of a couple is what brought the witch to her next location. She stayed a few steps behind them, making sure her heels made little to no sound as she glided across the foyer to an unmarked door. Surely if it was made to be inconspicuous, the guard out front ruined the illusion. He gave a quick glance to the unknown pair before stepping aside, the door opening and the light inside illuminating the floor with a opaque red. Now, she truly couldn’t walk away.

With squared shoulders she approached the door, her eyes holding no hesitation as she looked at the guard plainly. He paused for one, two, three seconds before stepping aside and granting her the same access. Not much shocked the witch anymore, but to say her eyes immediately widened at the sight before her would be an understatement. The nakedness was not alarming, but instead what the naked bodies were engaging in was the cause for shocking curiosity. 

Violca stayed close to the wall, not out of fear, but out of uncertainty. She didn’t want to stare and offend, but this was all for entertainment, right? Back and forth she ran a finger over her lips slowly, eyes drinking in the scene and her body ignoring the pull towards the center of the crowd. A clearing shake of her head was given, causing her to finally take note of the person standing to her left, their eyes fixated on the crowd as well. “Your face is almost as red as this room... Like what you see?”, she breathed out with a low chuckle.

when: 5:40 pm, just after sunset

Vivienne and Valentina sat on a park bench near their family’s Brakebills mansion. Though the twins technically lived in the Phi Phi house at Astoria University, they often grew tired of the other girls and needed ‘us time’ somewhere a bit more luxe. They were having a picnic, or rather, their version of one. The bench was laden with furs and enchanted to keep the crisp autumn winds from messing up their hair. They were eating caviar and macarons, and drinking piping hot cups of a tea potion that their grandmother swore kept her looking young. 

“This tea tastes horrendous,” Vivienne complained. “We should have brought champagne like usual.”

“Agreed. I would even settle for prosecco,” Valentina replied.

“Since when do you settle for prosecco?”

“I don’t, I’m just saying this tastes that bad. Besides, Nana was batshit insane. I don’t know why we would listen to that hag.”

“It can’t hurt,” Vivienne mused. 

Valentina sighed. “Let’s take a selfie,” she suggested, holding up her phone.

“Ugh, no, I was up all night studying and now I look like someone who can’t afford beauty sleep.”

“Yikes. Studying what?”

“Turning water into wine. So far it all tastes like it comes from a box.”

“Ew,” Valentina replied. A moment later she sharply turned her head. “I think I hear something, be quiet.”
