Lavender Morales - The Lover
A Study In Friendship
nixplorer:
If Phoenix was being honest with herself, she would have to admit that she was desperate to repair things with Lavender. The girl had been closer to her than anyone had ever gotten, and she longed to repair that relationship and go back to being like sisters. Every chance she got, she asked the girl to study together and today Lavender had relented. She let her body sprawl across her bed, her feet hanging off one side and the other holding her laptop. Every time she got knee deep in studying, her phone made a tinkle-tinkle and she grabbed it like a lifeline every single time.
Had she told any of her sisters about her budding romance with Lucius? No, she hadn’t. The better question should be why not? It was new, this thing between them, and she wanted to hold onto it by herself for a little while and bask in the butterflies alone. She heard Lavender speak, but it took her a minute to answer. Should I type...she thought to herself, hesitating for a moment.
Finally she heard the girls tone and her hazel eyes peeled from the screen in front of her. “I’m…I’m sorry, Lav. You’re right.” She put it down and turned to the question, only to hear the tinkle-tinkle again. “Just…let me just answer him, okay? Lucius can text a million times before–“ She stopped, stunned that she’d said his name out loud. The secret was out, just like that. “We’ve, um…been seeing each other. For a bit.”
Lavender had been sure that the little bell tone coming from Phoenix’s phone was Selena. It was the only person Lavender had known Phoenix to text so much so fast. But the name that tumbled out of Phoenix’s mouth was probably one of the very few names that could have annoyed her more - and probably none could have shocked her so much.
There was a solid few seconds of silence in the bedroom as Lavender looked at Phoenix with her eyebrows so high they nearly disappeared beneath her wild hair. She was expecting hoping that Phoenix would drop a laugh and a just kidding! but none came.
“So you’re,” Lavender said flatly, “ not joking then.” She leaned ever so slightly back and tilted her head a few degrees, her very body displaying the disbelief she felt at her words. “Did you somehow find another boy with a dumb name like Lucius or are you actually saying what I think you’re saying and you’re dating that pretentious son of a bitch from St. Leviathans.” Though it was phrased as a question, but her tone didn’t match. She knew the answer already.

Where: Skeezy Bar Downtown When: Just Past Noon Who: @lenxivy
Lavender stood a few feet back from where Selena stood, her arms crossed and her face bored as Selena played sorority president of the year and spoke in her annoying high pitched “super cute” voice to the owner of the particularly skeezy bar they were currently checking out for this “Battle of the Bands” thing. Lavender didn’t know anything about it, but when Selena had pulled the “vice president of the sorority” card, Lavender couldn’t really say no.
Selena hardly ever called on Lavender to fulfill vice president duties - mostly because the sorority hardly did any sorority type activities - and, honestly, she wished she could bail on them when Selena did and they were things like this.
Selena bent a little further onto the bar in a move Lavender knew all too well, trying to get the guy on the other side of it to just let it slide that there was bound to be underage people in attendance of the event. Lavender pulled her brows together as she watched the man’s eyes travel just where Selena had intended and didn’t miss the drip of sweat that rolled from his forehead as he began to weigh his options.
Lavender didn’t know which one she’d rather punch at that moment.
The man made the choice for her as he bent in a little closer as if to whisper in Selena’s ear, though his eyes trailed from Selena to Lavender and back in a hungry manner. Before the blotchy-faced man could taint Selena’s earlobe with no doubt alcohol scented breath, Lavender grabbed her by the arm and pulled her away.
“This place is shit. I told you - any bar that would let us in isn’t worth our presence.” She looked directly at the startled man as she let the venom filled words drip from the plump lips he had been admiring a minute before. They fell into a saccharine smile that nowhere near reached her eyes. “I think we’ll be taking our business elsewhere. You’re welcome for our time.” She didn’t even wait for a reply before turning to the exit (though she hated to give the man the view) and pulled Selena along with her.

Where: Phi Phi Omega Chapter House - Phoenix’s Room When: The Night Before Homework Is Due Who: @nixplorer
When Phoenix had asked Lavender to do a homework/study session with her, she had almost said no, but in the end, no matter what awkwardnees had happened between them, they were friends and Lavender did want to get back to that point. So here they were, sprawled on Phoenix’s bed with their laptops and notebooks open around them. Lavender had the end of her pen in between her lips as she looked down on the question she was currently stumbling through before, with a sigh, giving in to ask Phoenix. “What do you have down for part 2 of question 5?” When nothing but silence was her response, she looked up to see the girl beside her with her eyes glued to her phone and a grin across her face - for like, the hundreth time that night.
“Hey.” She snapped, irritation getting the better of her. “Am I here to help you study or just so you can copy my work while you just grin at you phone all night long?” Her brows were furrowed as she sat up straighter.

Where: Kaffiene When: Saturday early March, 9:48am Who: Open to All
Lavender bit at the end of her pen as she stared at the spot on the page of the open notebook before her where the writing stopped. With a sigh, she threw the pen down and got up. It made no bit of sense to her - and she had been the one who wrote the damn thing.
She had been on the edge of a breakthrough the night before - scribbling equations, ciphers, sigils and more at a whirlwind speed, trying to keep up with her racing mind. Suddenly, her sorority sisters slammed open her door with fists and slammed closed her notebook with a flick of a wrist. Her train of thought was completely derailed and before she had a chance to find it once more, the girls were dragging her from her seat going on about some “best party of the year. The rest of the night…a blur.
This morning, Lavender had left the chapter house early - most of girls still sleeping in and sleeping off their hangovers - and made her way to the cafe to nurse her own hangover and also get out of the house to find some peace and quiet in the noisy crowd. She was hopeful that she would find that train of thought that had her toeing the line of something big the night before by following her notes, but she had had no luck yet.
Lavender let out a frustrated huff - probably the thousandath that morning - as she made it back toawrds her small table with her refill of coffee. With a breath of latin and a swirling of her finger, she watched as the liquid turned to a slightly lighter shade in a small whirlpool. She was so focused on the coffee’s color - Lavender was very particular with her coffee - that she didn’t notice the person standing from a chair right in front of her before she ran square into them, spilling her coffee over them both in the process. She muttered the curse and the beginning of an incantation, her hands already moving to form the correct formation to remove the liquid before quickly remembering this was public - and most of public didn’t take kindly to magic. The spattering of a spell that was tumbling from her lips made a not so smooth transition to a stuttered apology and her hands snapped from spellwork to dabbing the liquid up with the sleeves of her sweatshirt with lack of a better way to mop up the hot coffee. “Oh my God! I’m so, so sorry! My brain’s just really focused on this - uh -project I’m working on. Um - lemme, uh,” she said with a jab of her thumb towards the counter, “lemme buy your next drink to make it up for you. Yeah?”
Kaffiene was generally a mix of the studious and the cool kids, and then you had Sports Gay Billie, who came in to get a coffee fix she no longer needed and hit on chicks. Death had really not changed her life so much, honestly. Today she ambled into the cute cafe post run, feigning a little shortness of breath to satisfy any nosy humans, then curled up in a corner with a banana mango smoothie to watch the world a little while.
She had nowhere to be in a hurry, and though most people busied themselves with hobbies of some kind- writing, listening to music, reading- Billie was content to just sit and be. Living as long as she had, time meant something a little different to her now. These moments in Kaffiene with a drink, they were over in the blink of an eye. It didn’t bore her to do very little during them, especially when her life was usually so action packed.
After a while though, she spotted a pretty young thing frustrated with her workload and topping up her mug. It was both an excuse to meet her and toy with her a little bit- not the type of chance Billie ever resisted. As the girl made her return trip Billie stood suddenly, as if moving towards the counter herself, pretending to flinch a little with surprise and shock as the liquid hit her. This wasn’t gonna lead to a see through shirt fiasco considering the sports bra she was rocking, so she laughed. “It’s okay- breathe! It’s probably my fault anyway, I was so away with the fairies I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
Her giggles died down into a chuckle then trailed off- she didn’t need the freebie, but her smoothie was gone and the girl was still cute up close, so. “Sure, if you insist. I could always go for a coffee.”
The laughter in response to her fumble had Lavender at a loss for a second. She could feel her cheeks heating a bit as she looked to the face of the woman in front of her with a mix of suprise and embarassment. Not only had she run full speed into a person, they were laughing at her. She could feel the eyes of everyone in the cafe on her - but it was all gone when the light, carefree voice rang out through the laughs. A airy wave of relief washed over her and she felt her shoulder sag a bit as she relaxed, her mouth curving a bit in reply to the laughter. “A coffee. Yeah, sure.” She said, feeling the heat once more creep back into her cheeks at the way the girl was inspecting her face. She quickly turned away and began walking back to the counter and - after apologizing for the mess she had caused, ordered two more coffees. They gave the two cups to her to-go with lids, even though she had said for here, and she rolled her eyes, but said nothing. “Here you go.” She said as she handed the girl her coffee, not quite looking into her eyes. “and sorry again.”

Thankfully, Catalina could handle her alcohol very well, and almost never had a hangover. She knew her limits and tended to stick to them, which included last night. All her sisters had drug the whole house out to a party and Cat wouldn’t lie, it was a hell of a good time. But, she had a schedule to adhere to.
Every Saturday morning, she’d wake up early and go to a yoga class, get her zen on, then go to Kaffiene for a chai vanilla latte. More often than not, she didn’t run into anyone she knew, most of her friends were never up this early and if they were they weren’t out and about. She noticed Lavender as soon as she walked in and was going to talk to her after she picked up her drink. Clearly the other girl had different plans because she was incredibly focused on mixing her coffee and didn’t notice Cat waiting to pick up her drink.
She hissed as she felt the hot drink spill over the front of her expensive tank top and leggings. It wasn’t a huge deal, she could say a few words and the stain would be gone, but Lavender beat her to it before stuttering to a halt. “Don’t stop on my account. I would have done the same thing.” Cat returned with a smile. She was not secretive about what she could do, but she knew that some other wytches were. Any time she could use her power, she would.
Lavender hadn’t even seen the person she had bumped into before she began apologizing and as soon as they spoke, she stopped quite suddenly. A slight wave of relief flowed over her as she looked up to see one of her sorority sisters standing before her in now stained clothes. A smirk twitched on her mouth before she replied, “If the entire cafe wasn’t looking at us right now, I would have,” She said with a tilt of her head, a slight motion towards, indeed, most of the people around them having halted there conversation at the sound of a cup clattering against the tile floor, “but due to recent events, I’m not exactly keen on broadcasting what I am.” Her smile turned a bit grim as she recalled the poisoned drinks of barely 2 months ago and the time Phoenix and Selena had been stalked through the town.

When people talk about having terrible moments, like little upsets that can cause your day to feel in the most privileged of ways off, it made Killian wonder why everyone was so easily riled up. What’s a spilled coffee on a t-shirt compared to huddling with a blanket under the inter pass? Nothing; the answer is nothing. More so since the moment he could feel the hot coffee trickling down his shirt, was the moment he finally looked up from his phone. “Oh no, it’s fine I should have been paying attention myself.” a hollow smile, curled between his cheeks while he helped in dabbing up his shirt (which he mentally checked off as ruined). “Oh, really you shouldn’t it’s an honest mistake.” feigning politeness, even if deep down he knew anything free was something he wanted. “I’ll settle for a scone really. I have enough servings of tea in me I might be mistaken for a Boston harbor at this rate…”
In between the patting, he felt something like a echo ripple through his chest muttering the words he didn’t quite understand…at least partly. “Something tells me you are in a particular need for caffeine more than myself” cryptic but subtle, “Really, you are kind…” his next words practically fell from his lips on accident, “—everyone in this town seems kind.”
Lavender was almost shocked at the softness the voice that replied to her carried. No anger was laced in the string of words that fell from the boys lips and they even curled in a slight smile as he spoke - though it didn’t reach his eyes. She slowed, observing him as they worked to dab up the liquid and couldn’t help smiling herself when he cracked a joke. She would be glad to treat him to a scone - and maybe continue to talk with him. Something in her wanted to get to know him more for some reason. She had begun making her way back to the counter when he spoke again and she couldn’t help the emotionless laugh that escaped her. “Trust me when i say they’re not. You’ve been lucky if you haven’t come across an unkind person here yet.”

The sound of the man’s voice set Lavender bristling immediately and after a brief raise of brows, her eyes narrowed towards him. He had most definitely heard her muttering her spell, but seemed as though he didn’t want to kill her for it, so that was good. She didn’t have to go on the defensive with him and she very much hated the thought of doing so with a man like him. She had had plenty of experience with different types of men in her previous profession and she would much rather punch this type in the dick than speak with them.
“Yes.” Lavender snapped back to him. “It does involve weird phrases and other languages. And it doesn’t involve you - thank you very much.” She bent to pick up the empty cup that, thankfully, had not shattered on the floor. “I would pay for the shirt, but coffee comes out with a single wash, so if you don’t want a drink, I think this is good day, sir.” Clenching her jaw to keep from doing more, she not so gently brushed past the man to grab her things and leave. She had had enough of people today - and it wasn’t even 10am.
“Oh, feisty.” Jax chuckled as he watched her bend down to pick up the coffee cup that she had dropped. “I wouldn’t trust you to buy me a new shirt anyway.” He waved in the air and shook his head. He had a specific taste in clothes and honestly, he wouldn’t trust anyone to buy anything for him. Well, besides his brother. His brother knew him well. “A drink? Yes. Coffee? No.” Jax said to her as he watched her move passed him. “I’m guessing you don’t drink this early in the morning though?” He asked as he began following her as she walked away. “Maybe you’ll indulge me in a drink later?”
Lavender could feel her anger beginning to tingle in the form of magic in her fingertips and she grit her teeth, trying to supress it. As words kept coming from this man’s mouth, it became harder and harder. When he fell in step behind her, her nails dug into her palms. “You.” she squeezed out between her teeth, the word dripping with a venom she felt in every inch of her body. “Are the last person I’d want to share a drink with.” Lavender didn’t look at the man as she spoke, slamming her notebook shut and beginning to shove her other belongings in her bag.

GABRIEL LIKED to grab a tea before work. Truthfully, this was his second caffeinated beverage, though the clock had yet to chime ‘ten’. He had never been much of a coffee drinker. He hated the bitter flavour, much preferring the sweet complexities of a good tea to dance across his tongue. But three children in, Gabriel could no longer get through his mornings without a heavy dose of caffeine. He needed that little surge of energy to bring back that pep in his step. At least until he could get them off to their designated care facilities and his natural disposition returned.
So Gabriel had grown accustomed to the bitter taste of coffee — albeit lessened by loads of creamer & honey. But he still liked to reward himself after a long morning of fatherly duties. So he tended to grab himself a tea from the local cafe — english breakfast, for that extra little kick. After all, it was a saturday and he’d probably spend his evening playing horsey. Gabriel hadn’t paid much mind to the other patrons, that was until he collided with one of them after trying to make his exit.
Gabriel was now wearing her drink. Dark liquid staining soaking his tan trousers & corduroy button down. He let out an audible gasp as the lukewarm liquid touched his skin — wincing as if to expect a burn. When none came, Gabriel relaxed some, less concerned for his attire than one might expect. He only half heard the incantation — assuming, as he often did, that it was simply another language. Gabriel focused on her frantic apologies, waving his hand as if to shake he matter off. “no, no that’s okay! It was an accident, and I should have been watching where I was going,” He offered a smile — that goofy one that said: I’ve had worse at breakfast. The pastor bent down to pick up his fallen cup, which was thankfully empty and left behind only a thin stream on tea on the tiled floor. “Uh, you don’t really need to make it up to me, it’s no big deal. You’re the one who lost your drink, so really I should be getting you one,” He didn’t want to test his heart today.
Lavender’s heart settled in her chest a bit when she looked into the face of the person now wearing her drink and saw a kind, fatherly face looking down to her. Him apologizing in return helped a smile settle on her features as well. Some people could be absolute dicks - most in her opinion - and she was glad to have, quite literally, bumped into the rare exception.
“Honestly,” Lavender said with a bit of a shrug, “I probably shouldn’t be having another cup. I’ve lost count of what number it was.” She gave a nervous bit of a laugh before looking back to the poor man’s splattered attire. “Are you sure you’re okay? It didn’t burn you, did it?” Her slight smile faded as a bit of worry flashed through her eyes.

Last night had been a long one, but Annabelle was used to that, by now. She’d gotten really good at covering up her dark circles and the bags underneath her eyes. If people only knew what lied under her beautiful make up, they’d be horrified. She ordered a black coffee and a blueberry muffin, waiting for a moment as they heated it up for her. Her icy blue gaze swept Kaffeine and stopped when she heard a muttering that was so familiar to her, yet different.
Her roommate chanted like that, using her abilities to get them things they needed. She was seated at their table where the curly headed girl was walking and when they collided her gaze was torn toward their direction. She bounced in her step as she waited for her muffin and when they called her name she nearly took it and ran. She saw her friend gearing up to use her charmspeak and she intervened.
“No, it’s okay!” She said loudly, making sure her friend didn’t start speaking. When she got angry there was no telling what would come out of her mouth and for some reason Annabelle felt compelled to stop it. The girl covered in coffee looked at Annabelle like she was crazy before storming out of the coffee shop altogether, leaving Annabelle and the apologetic girl alone with each other in an awkward silence.
“I’m sorry for my friend. She has a temper, sometimes. There are times where I have to intervene before she does something she’ll regret later. She’s late for work anyways. That’s why she was leaving so quickly when you collided.”
Lavender was, to say the least, suprised if not even confused when the response to her apology came from behind here - right where she was pointing. She turned to the source of the reply only to whip back around to the woman leaving the shop in a huff. Once more she turned to the other woman behind her and began to vaguely point towards the door as it slammed closed, but before she could speak, the other was explaining.
“Ah.” She said in short reply before bending to start picking up the broken shards of the ceramic mug that had shattered on the floor. “Now I feel a little worse she has to go into work with that giant stain though.” Lavender said towards the floor, her brow knotted in concentration as to hopefully not slice open her finger tips.

Jax’s hearing was impeccable. Not only was it because of his species, but he had trained himself to hear things from far away. He was an eavesdropper, to say the least, and he prided himself in it, among other things. And so when he heard a latin word being spoken aloud in the coffee shop, a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips and he purposely got in the way of the girl.
The vampire ignored the coffee that was now spilt on his shirt and instead, focused on the words she was uttering. She spoke them quickly and then floundered to cover it up. He chuckled, shaking his head back and forth as he finally let his eyes settle on her. “Focused. Interesting choice of words.” He licked his lips as he watched her, not even caring that the contents of her coffee was now all over his shirt. “And your project consists of you uttering weird phrases, does it?” Jax tilted his head to the side, eyeing her closely. “No, no, I don’t want any. Wouldn’t want to give you a chance to spill more of it on me.” He let out a sigh. “Although, I suppose it would be the best time for you to do so, considering how my shirt is ruined.”
The sound of the man’s voice set Lavender bristling immediately and after a brief raise of brows, her eyes narrowed towards him.
Yeah?”

iii. about the species
most wytches are in fact born wytches. this is a genetical gift that is passed down through generations, however, not every family member receives the gift. while some think that wytches are a symbol of dark magic - but that is not always the case. wytches have a choice, while dark magic does exist - it is not something a wytch needs to perform. dark magic can be extremely dangerous and life threatening and is quite difficult to control. wytches are by all accounts human, they just possess a special supernatural ability. this ability starts to manifest itself around the age of 12, though sometimes sooner - and in others it happens later. though wytches are considered to be ultimately powerful - they did in fact create vaympires and weyrwolves… though this was through the use of dark magic.
iv. the past
some people are just born with a certain spark in them. a light that shines every time they smile or laugh. a light that attracts the people around them like moths to a flame. lavender morales was one of those people from the first breath she took - a light shining from her that made all around her smile and fawn over her as a child.
she started dance at a young age, loving the chance to perform and loving that people couldn’t take their eyes off her as she did. as a young teen, she took up singing as well and absolutely enchanting all who heard her voice. through high school, she landed the lead role in all the school plays, headed the cheerleading squad as only a junior, walked with the homecoming and prom courts. wherever a spotlight shone, lavender was there, standing boldly as the audience gave a standing ovation and loving every single second of it. “the greatest talent deadwood has ever seen!” her friends and family all cried.
there was no surprise when she announced at just sixteen that she wouldn’t be attending college, but heading the the west coast after graduation and that she did. the summer after she finished high school, she left her entire life behind to pursue her dream in the bright, grand city of LA - only to have everything thrown back in her face.
she quickly went through her entire life savings as she went from audition to audition only to be turned away in seconds. slowly, she began losing hope. she began auditioning for smaller and smaller roles at less and less known studios. she put her name on every casting call she could find. “anything,” she cried into the night, “any role will do!” and so her wish was granted.
lavender was not exactly thrilled by the role she landed, but she hadn’t eaten in days to make the months rent and bills of the shoddy apartment she called home. the company that reached out her offered great money - if only she showed a little skin. in a weeks time, she had quite following on her camshow page and was making ends meet, but every time she turned off the camera, the hatred she showed for what she had to do to live showed through. she turned to alcohol and drugs to make the job a little easier, but everyday, that spark within her grew dimmer and dimmer until it was entirely snuffed out.
v. the current
for six months this went on until one of the regulars to her page found lavender - her name, her number, her home. for a week, he messaged and called her phone until she blocked the number, then the unthinkable happened. the man accosted her as she left front door (thank god she kept it triple locked) spewing how they were meant to be and attempting to kidnap her.
one instant, he was clinging and clawing at her and the next, he was against a wall with a gun pointed at his motionless corpse. a scream from a neighbor who had seen it all took her out of the trance she had been in from the moment he had grabbed onto her. multiple eyewitnesses proved that she had shot him in self-defense at court and the next day, she was gone - back home to deadwood.
lavender came back different. the spark that had shone from within her was gone - snuffed out by the hell she had experienced in LA. but it had been replaced by a burning, raging fire within her.
❝ Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. ❞
vi. connections
✗ PHOENIX CLAYTON - though her father was in the picture, her mother was the one who did both physical and emotional labor that came with raising four daughters and a thirty-two year old man. she soon found that it was easier to have a full list of friends that she didn’t like than spending time at her chaotic home. phoenix was caught right in the middle - she was like a sister but without the need to care for her like one. she was the truth, always speaking her mind regardless if you disagreed or not. she at many times envied that about the other wytch. now they have recently found each other again, both joining a coven disguised as a sorority. she’s hoping to build up the courage to tell her her hidden, ugly truth.
✗ VALENTINA & VIVIENNE WINTHROP - the three ruled the suburban streets of deadwood during their high school days. they were poised, quizzical, and could easily turn the crowd to their favor. she had always found the twins slightly odd, they’d speak but almost in code. for their ears only. she was able to find a common ground between them, often being the only one person that understood their devious ways. fast forward to the present, she finds herself steering away from the sisters. with a tainted past looming over her, she’s unsure if aligning herself with them is the best idea. if they were to find out about her recent endeavors in LA, would blackmail be beneath them? of course not.
✗ SELENA IVY - no, she didn’t consider herself the queen bee, or the head cheerleader, or nothing of the sort. she had the attributes ( in fact, she was a head cheerleader ), her walk signals that life has given her a leverage because of her looks, but she has learned a sinister lie the world tells women about beauty. that they need to be at each other’s throat for the approval of anyone that’s not themselves. in a world that expects her to hate selena out of petty reasons… she’s having a hard time not doing exactly that. granted she’s fallen starstruck upon meeting her, and not to mention phoenix had mentioned the wytch about a million times before they had met. she’s like the stereotypical rival in tween movies she’s never wanted and is now having to befriend a few years too late for that kind of unnecessary drama.
