I like to think that Pangzi was a street kid raised by gangs and that's why he has such a terrifying reputation that a lot of people are like: ahaha, cross Pangzi? No thank you! Don't you know he once beat a man to death with his own shoes just for some bread!
And attached to that, Pangzi got into tomb raiding because he was physically strong. He was an asset - but one that was meant to be discarded. He knew that going in, but the money was too good to resist (heh) so once they got into the tomb and all the traps were disabled, he cooked a large meal to poison everyone and took the treasure for himself. Until Wu Xie (and a little bit Xiao-ge) he was very much "every man for himself" and "survivors get the goods"
His geniality was a cover. But with Wu Xie it became real & the Iron Triangle became a family. And now Pangzi actually keeps a rainy day fund just in case something happens and they need to retire. He no longer thinks as every day as his last.
pangzi probably had to fend for himself from quite young. i think he did have to care for his family for a while. fits his personality quite well if you ask me and why he’d have to find ways to make money fast.
once his family is gone, though, he’s got nothing left to lose. he’s smart, he’s strong, he’s crafty and he knows he’ll be underestimated because of his size. he learned at school how to stay in the background, unnoticed. all these things help when it comes to tomb raiding. I also like to think he met hei xiazi early on, who saw great potential in him and helped him grow into the confident loud tomb raider he is now.
but yes as you said once he find wu xie and xiaoge, he finds a family again. a home. a reason to live. then money only matters because it’s what keeps them safe, helps him keep them happy. helps him build a good home for the people he loves.
