Did you guys know Trevor Jones recently uploaded the official Dark Crystal soundtrack to youtube? here is the song I will be walking down the aisle to:

At the heart of the story is the Crystal of Truth. It’s the pure Source the life-giving energy that sustains all beings and keeps the world in harmony. When the Skeksis arrive, they tamper with it, and the Crystal becomes cracked. That fracture is like the fall of consciousness: the separation of beings from Source. From then on, everything spirals into imbalance.

The Skeksis, parasitic rulers, are the alien/archonic forces who exploit the fracture. They use the corrupted Crystal to drain the essence of the Gelfling. This is the loosh-harvesting-taking divine energy and feeding it into their own decaying system. They are like extensions of the Demiurge: false gods who set themselves up as masters of a reality they didn’t create, but manipulate.

The Gelfling represent humanity, originally whole, gifted with abilities, psychically connected. Once separated and tricked into obedience, they forget their power. The Skeksis govern them through division, fear, and illusion, just as archonic forces keep humans divided and unaware of their true origin.

Mother Aughra is the great seer. She represents the Sophia archetype the original wisdom being, connected to the stars and the living cosmos. Like Sophia, Aughra once embodied the balance of creation, watching over the harmony between beings and Source. But when she trusted the Skeksis to guide the Crystal, she turned her attention away from the world and lost her active role. This parallels Sophia’s “fall” when she turned her gaze toward the Demiurge, her attention became caught in the false system. She regrets, she awakens, and she tries to guide the Gelfling back to truth.

In this sense:

* The Crystal = the Divine Source, the fullness of creation (the Pleroma).

* The Skeksis = Archons/Demiurge forces, who corrupt the crystal/light and feed parasitically.

* The Gelfling = Humanity, fractured and ruled, yet still holding the key to awakening.

* Mother Aughra = Sophia, fallen from her place of pure wisdom, but still the living bridge back to the Source, guiding others to reclaim the truth.

And just like in the myths, the healing comes when the Gelfling (humanity) remember who they are, stop fighting each other, and unite to restore the Crystal (the spark of Source) to wholeness.

Imagine a fantasy world where innocent, magical beings live in harmony with nature. These beings are the Gelfling, they’re pure, intuitive, deeply connected to each other and to the life force of their world. In a way, they represent humanity before corruption: whole, gifted, and in tune with Source.

Then, from outside their world, come the Skeksis, parasitic, alien-like creatures. The Skeksis aren’t creators, they’re consumers. They can’t generate their own energy, so they feed by exploiting others. They trick the Gelfling, set themselves up as rulers, and slowly strip them of their abilities and freedom. The Skeksis keep the Gelfling divided, teaching them to fear one another and obey authority because as long as the Gelfling are separated, they’re easier to control.

The most chilling part is how the Skeksis survive: they literally drain the essence (life-force) of the Gelfling and drink it. In metaphysical terms, this is like harvesting loosh the energy that humans generate through fear, suffering, and even worship. The Skeksis don’t just feed on bodies, they feed on spirit, siphoning vitality to extend their own hollow lives.

So the story becomes an allegory for our reality: humanity (the Gelfling) was once much more connected to Source, to psychic gifts, to unity. But when “the Skeksis” (symbolizing invasive alien or archonic forces) arrived, they fractured us, put systems of control in place, and began to harvest our energy. The result is a world where we’ve forgotten our own power, while unseen rulers live off the force we don’t even realize we’re giving away.

But just as in the story awakening begins when the Gelfling remember who they are, unite, and realize the Skeksis only rule because of illusion, division, and the harvesting of fear.

I won't make it through this without sobbing my eyes out. #JimHenson helped make me who I am. He gave me worlds and friends and magic. He took cloth and made it live and breathe and say hello.

I wrote this a few years ago after hearing again how he made @kermitthefrog . It's called Just A Coat.
