minding his own business , arthur sat whittling at a length of wood , blade working slow and sure as he carved it down into a sharpened stake ( something to hold a tent in place ) the rhythm of it kept him steady , gave his hands something honest to do . he noticed her coming before she spoke , lifting his gaze without hurry , leaning back just enough to meet her eye .
𝒖𝒏𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒕𝒆𝒅 @thedevilsprice : A hiccup as Karen held tightly the neck of her whiskey bottle. She's not standing up straight, and the strap to her nightgown has slid down her arm. Thankfully the girl's are still intact. "Next time you rescue Sean, don't bring him back." She points with a finger at Arthur. "I ain't.. no one ain't.. he ain't.." So there. She moves along to the next person in camp to antagonize.
❝ alright , miss jones . ❞ he said , a faint smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth . ❝ i’ll remember that . ❞
but his thoughts drifted all the same ----- back to hearing englishman like a bird-chitter . the sing-song lilt of his voice , the way he could spin words into circles for hours on end , saying plenty without saying a damn thing . all puffed-up talk and polished nonsense , carried on a tide of his own ego .
arthur exhaled through his nose , shaking his head faintly as he went back to his carving ----- then raised his voice just enough to call after her .
❝ if it helps . ❞ he drawled . ❝ i’m already regrettin’ it myself . ❞
