Thee-O Live at Magic Wednesdays - December 1995
This is an 88-minute audio recording of DJ Thee-O playing live on December 20, 1995, at Magic Wednesdays, held at Carlos and Charlie's on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. The set began at 12:05 am the following morning.
Over a career spanning more than 20 years, Jacob Ofilas, aka Thee-O, is one of the few DJ's from LA's original rave community who became known for mastering a variety of dance music genres.
In the early days (93-96), Thee-O was the city's authority on hard trance and psy trance. When you heard those up-tempo bass lines, driving kick drums and screaming synth arpeggios, you knew Thee-O was on the decks. As the years passed, Thee-O expanded his repertoire to include techno and house, among other styles.
Thee-O was certainly one of the hardest working DJ's of the era. I can't recall a single weekend when his name didn't appear on numerous flyers. It seemed he was playing everywhere, all the time.
Recorded at Magic Wednesdays when it was at Carlos and Charlie's on Sunset, this eclectic mix captures a moment in time when Thee-O drifted away from his usual fare of psy and hard trance. It starts with... a funky electro track! The set then proceeds to meander through a menagerie of styles including breakbeat, techno and house. For the second half, Thee-O returns to the aggressive trance style he was known for.
In recent years, Thee-O has shifted more toward the realm of house music. However, he continues to mix it up by incorporating a variety of styles in his sets. Whatever he chooses to play, you can rest assured you will be treated to an inspired aural journey.
This set from Magic Wednesdays 1995 provides an early glimpse of Thee-O's musical evolution.

(Thee-O) This morning we kick things off with a legend’s set from EDC 2016. This guy was introduced to me by my best friend and I have followed him for over a decade. He recently went to EDC 2016 and performed this set on an art car during the EDC parade!!!

Thee-O Live at Plantasia NYE 1995 New Years Eve
This is an audio recording of Thee-O playing live at Plantasia on New Year's Eve, December 31, 1994. Plantasia took place at the National Orange Show complex in San Bernadino, near Los Angeles, California. This portion of Thee-O's set began around 9:30 pm.
Thee-O was the opening DJ in the big room at the NOS center, the same room where Moby, Frankie Bones and Carl Craig would later play. The gates had just opened when Thee-O started his set, so people were just starting to filter in. By the end of his set the crowd had swelled and the excitement in the air was palpable.
A note about the sound quality. For this event I rented some professional gear, including 2 AKG C414's - amazing mics but way more sensitive than what I was used to. They capture much more bass frequency than the Sony stereo mic I normally used. The room had a natural booming reverb, which was definitely captured in the recording. During mastering I minimized those frequencies but it's still noticeable. In any event, the final product sounds very 'live', making it easy to imagine listening and dancing to Thee-O in that cavernous main room at the Orange Show!

Stylus - Got To Have It (Boogie Basics)
Los Angeles-based outfit Boogie Basics welcomes three-man DJ / production team Stylus to the roster, ushering in the group’s inaugural single “Got To Have It.” Comprised of Thee-O, Rob Pointer, and Luis Rosario, each member of Stylus brings nearly two decades worth of professional experience to the table. Simultaneously representing three of the country’s biggest house scenes - hailing from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City respectively - Thee-O, Rob, and Luis have each accrued impressive accolades in their cities. From pioneering studios and directing industry software companies like Propellerhead, to founding fêted club nights and alternative festivals, Stylus is hardly short of experience or capability. Coming out with a bang, “Got To Have It” is an effective but somber melodic house hybrid with choppy tech-house tendencies. Slipping back and forth between chirping crescendos and bubbling synths, bits of organic timbre and rigid instrumentation create an obstacle course of complexity that doesn’t overwhelm. It’s a definite dance floor winner. If “Got To Have It” is any indication of things to come it’s fair to say that this is undoubtedly only the start of what will surely be a fruitful collaboration … the future looks bright.
Chris Fortier - “Got to have it? I got it!” DJ Schwa (Shades of Gray) - “Lovely track. I like it.” Jelo (Bugeyedrecords) - “Sounds fun and groovy … neat FX, too.” Joey Silvero (Distant People) - “Deep and deadly sound … something to twist people up in late night sets.” Al Bradley (3am Recordings) - “Cool, trippy sounds abound here, over the top of a great rolling percussive groove. Nicely done!” [sic] (mu-sic / Fnoob Radio) - “Really liking the dark discordant feel of this … I wasn’t excepting it at all from the intro!” Simon Caldwell (Mad Racket) - “Nice and dirty!” Brandon Bass (Hub City Music) - “Really cool tune. Nice for late nights and early morning rituals.” Mr. Fuzz (Deeptouch / Soulgroove) - “Excellent release. Smashing beat and that bass line … wow.” Bobi (Global Movement Radio Show) - “Solid house with a feel for a big system.” Joshua Jacobs (Music You Need blog) - “Eerie techno and acid vibes with a solid four on the floor beat … this track from Stylus might leave the dance floor in awe.”
