anon: i read the two articles you placed in my ask and i'd like to draw attention to the first article where it said "Most colleges and universities say they use a more holistic approach which factors in race more generally by seeing it as a "plus" factor." and "race is a factor in admissions but can't be used in a quota or point system" aka being a completive sports person or a talented pianist is also a "plus factor" it's just something that adds to your application and that race is just a factor that could be used in gaining diversity in the admitted class, but a lot of things that don't have to do with race could also be used to increase diversity. in addition, if you look up more information on affirmative action you'll see that it's not legal in all states. also, [email protected]? really? you could just tell me who you are and we could have this conversation in person, i'm totally willing to do that.

theelectrictree replied to your post: well yeah you’re right, minorities have to be qualified to get in, but their qualifications don’t have to be high as those of other people. also, colleges don’t use quotas but race does play a role (it’s not the sole reason a college would accept a student, but it can definitely help a college pick one student over another). and i’m sure you’re an amazing and well-rounded person and your merit speaks for itself!
:( wait theres this book about that about how affirmative action is causing minorities to feel like uncomfortable at ivies which is exactly what youre saying. i personally can’t imagine being at a school without asians
i've read some news articles about it and whenever i visit a college, especially an ivy, i always ask a minority student what it's like to be a minority at the school because while i don't see myself as black i understand that most people do and i want to see what it would be like to live in that environment for 4 years. and i've heard similar things from minorities at ivys; while they say it's accepting, they still feel like they need to prove themselves to their peers especially the first two years of college.
