Okay… from the get go, I was a huge fan of the Anita Blake series. I was there from the very first book, used to take part in discussions on the old forum (back in the days when Darla Cook manned it) and was a die hard fan of both the author and the series .
(Mind you, that was all before Laurell lost her mind and (in my opinion) completely derailed the character thanks to her ongoing midlife crisis.)
Anita was one of my favorite characters up until about book 13 (Micah) when things started going south. By book 16 (Blood Noir) I was getting twitchy—stopped buying the books and started ‘borrowing’ them instead . The last Novella/short story (and I use that term verrrrry loosely) Jason pretty much was the final coffin nail in what was once a truly epic series—though I still recommend the earlier books to friends because they were really, really entertaining.
{Side note: I don’t know what the fuck is up with Penguin Group (publishers) letting their authors go fucking nuts and derail their characters (Penguin also owns Razorbill, which put out the hot mess Bloodlines series for RM). It appears that once an author hits a certain sales level, they just let them do whatever the hell they want—this is confirmed by the fact they gave Hamilton a no edit clause on her last contract. (Which I find strange since, from my personal experience, they are extremely controlling when negotiating and refuse to budge on the things they want changed in a book/series—but that’s neither here nor there). }
Dear Penguin Group: Perhaps you should contact the mun of theexecutionerx and ask her to ghostwrite the remainder of the series, since she understands Anita better than LKH and could probably get the trainwreck the series has become back on track.
theexecutionerx is classic Anita—the well written, grab you by the throat Heroine I fell in love with. She’s Anita the way she was meant to be written—kick ass, sarcastic and fucking amazing. Seriously—read book one of the series (if you want to read it before investing in the books, shoot me a message) then browse the blog and you’ll see what I mean—the mun’s portrayal is perfect. This is the Anita longtime fans remember and want—whenever I see someone bemoaning what the series has become, I point them at theexecutionerx and tell them to go read the real Anita.
