When the negotiations with England reach their conclusion for the night, she takes his hand and walks with him down the hall. Servants are lighting candles when she leads him into the bedroom; she sits down with him and waits for them to finish their work.

When the last servant leaves with a curtsey, she turns to Francis and smiles, her fingertips dancing at the edge of his doubloon. “This needs to come off,” she says, quietly. 

Francis sighs, gives a minuscule shake of his head. “Mary, I don’t...”

“You’re exhausted,” she replies, cupping his face between her hands. “And you’re so tense, Francis, I can see it so clearly. Let me take care of you tonight. Please?”

He stares at her for one long, inscrutable moment, then nods. Together, they rise from the bed and help each other change into their nightclothes. When Mary is in a nightdress and Francis a pair of trousers, she takes his hand and returns to the bed.

“Lie down, on your stomach,” she says, and he does, propping his head full of golden curls on his forearms. Mary rucks up her skirts and straddles the backs of his thighs. She runs her hands through his hair once, then place her palms flat against his shoulder blades.

When she presses her thumbs into the cord of muscle underneath his skin, Francis groans, and she tuts at the tenseness in his body. She presses harder, rubbing in slow circles, and Francis gives a little approving huff as the muscle relaxes. She trails her touch down to his waist, massaging the muscles around the small of his back, kissing the freckles that dot his skin. She even rubs at his neck, down his shoulders and upper arms— Francis makes little approving noises all the while, directing her to where he needs the most care. 

She works until his muscles are supple and relaxed under her fingers, and he’s all but melted into the bed. Oh, but he’s beautiful, and her heart fills full to bursting with love of him.

His eyes are glazed when he turns over and caresses her cheek. Mary clasps his wrist and turns her head, kissing his lifeline. “I should—” he starts.

“We should go to sleep,” she says, firmly. Francis sighs again, his eyes fluttering closed. In a matter of moments, he is asleep, the tension of the day forgotten. 

She smiles as she kisses his forehead. “Bonne nuit, chéri.”
