28 DAYS OF BLK THEYSTORY ✊🏾 🖤 -Pls DM us submissions of work you would like to see honored! @ackeefruit is honoring the work of Camille Billops, especially her 1982 film “Suzanne, Suzanne” WHY I NEEDED THIS: camille billops' is an experimental documentarian who makes these really intimate films about herself and her family. her films are like old school internet overshares in the best way-- the way where we recognize that emotional vulnerability feels like something that only white women are allowed to display unless we're in that portion of the narrative arc of a movie centering our trauma and stoicism. suzzane suzzane is one of my favorite films by her. her cousin suzzane, her family, her friends, talk about suzzane's life and upbringing in ways that are honest and unflinching and deeply intimate. i feel like so often i see or hear this trope of black women addicted to drugs abandoning their children/being worthless/being disposable. billops confronts that head on by making sure she tells this story of a woman she cares for and loves-- insisting that we think more fully and compassionately about the people in our community we find it easier to look away from. #camillebillops #blackfilm #blackwomeninfilm #newmedia #thefirstandthelastpdx
