Hello! I am back with another movie review but don’t fret, I'll also do book ones, too. Around 10 am, I watched and made a couple notes on “The Five Obstructions”. *inserts synopsis* “In 1967, experimental filmmaker Jorgen Leth created a striking short film, "The Perfect Human," starring a man and women sitting in a box while a narrator poses questions about their relationship and humanity. Years later, Danish director Lars von Trier made a deal with Leth to remake the film five times, each under a different set of circumstances and with von Trier's strictly prescribed rules. As Leth completes each challenge, von Trier creates ever more elaborate rules for the contest.”
In my notes, I gave this docu an 8/10. The rating serves as an explanation itself only because an 8 out of 10 would classify as a B in a letter grade system. Yes, I do believe it was a B for me. I thought this movie, more so documentary, was going to be as philosophical as Waking Life but as I’ve read several reviews (and agreed with all), you can’t really find a film like it. However, it was still philosophical. It made me think of what my version of a Perfect Human was (spoiler: nothing like what they depicted). I used to think you could classify something as ‘perfect’ but each person has their own perspective so naturally, the idea of perfection doesn’t exist. I’m not really a film person, especially with an experimental film but I do enjoy learning what and what isn’t good in the film industry (which I soon realized differentiates from one film maker to another). I enjoyed it because each obstruction kept getting harder and more effort needed to be put into it regardless of how hard or easy it was. The audience can connect with how a film maker decides what they don’t and don’t like. The film and the film maker communicated with the audience which I thoroughly enjoyed. Would totally try watching it high but I think its a one time watch for me.
Quote that resonated with me: “Here is the perfect woman: Me, I am a woman One of the best One of the richest in love One of the most experienced. Me, who is always loyal Me, who is always friendly Me, who is always sensitive Me, who is very much in love Me, who is very elegant I am one of the most beautiful women I have lots of affection for other people I have a lot of feeling I am a woman with great strength of spirit”
