THE FLY II 1989 Sci-fi/Horror “Like Father, Like Son” #4 of 500 With no sign of the creepy dark charm that David Cronenberg gave to the original film, I find myself a little disappointed in the son of the fly AKA “The Fly 2”. Eric Stoltz provides a decent performance as Martin Brundle son of Seth Brundle the original fly. Having been born slithering into the world, martins first and greatest loss is the passing of his mother, which leaves him in the self-appointed care of Anton Bartok (Lee Richardson), the CEO of the laboratory where Martin’s father worked as a research scientist. Being born with obviously rare genetic traits, Martin find some self aging rapidly, And confined to the laboratory facilities with only Beth (Daphne Zuniga) as his friend and companion. now Martin races to find the cure for his unique genetic state all well-being closely scrutinized and monitored by the laboratory staff and CEO. I can’t help but wonder had David Cronenberg had anything to do with this film if it might have turned out a little less cute and campy, and a little bit more grotesque. Even the fly on human kills littering the end of the movie felt, even through fairly decent practical effects, like they contributed very little to the neat and tidy conclusion to the film. Was I wrong to want something a little darker.
