The Fury (1978) When Peter’s son Robin is kidnapped because of his psychic abilities. Peter must do everything he can to get his son back from the CIA who aim to use him as a weapon. I mean from the description, this film seems pretty great right? The problem is, it doesn’t play out that way and after a lively and full bodied start, the film goes into slow motion. It’s a lot going on, with not a lot going on, and it becomes quite an arduous affair in the end. It has its moments when it does well however, and there are some great set pieces and moments of action sprinkled throughout. The acting isn’t to be moaned about, and I quite enjoyed Kirk Douglas in this... when I seen him. He’s a main character for a while, then he disappears, then he’s back it’s a strange setting. John Cassavetes also plays his role well when he’s there and Amy Irving does just as well. This isn’t by any means a bad film, I just felt it failed to deliver on its initial idea and gets lost. It’s idea of supernatural humans being used as weapons is great, but it doesn’t play out that way and it’s a lot of sitting waiting for the big moment that essentially never comes. Which is a shame, after 2 hours for it to fizzle out into a pretty pointless affair leaves a bit of a bad taste in your mouth. Overall, I think The Fury is more inclined to be a book than a movie.
