(Hey MPC post this Nov 5 please!)
So…. for those of you who don’t know, tonight is Bonfire Night here! It’s one of the most strangest of English celebrations, but it’s probably one of the biggest events where I live particularly - parades, fireworks, and burning effigies. You get the gist.
And the reason I’m particularly focusing on this is that it’s making me think about my own media. Of course, I was very patriotic back then. Not so now. Bit weird. Of course I was upper class back then so you can tell how I was led in a patriotic direction. I would have seen all these celebrations over a centuries old holiday and thought nothing of it.
Nowadays, even as an English person still, when I watch the parade go past, as it will tonight, I keep wondering why we still celebrate it. After all, we’re commemorating… what’s pretty much patriotism still right? What with the origins and all that. We’re celebrating a guy’s (pun not intended) death really.
Makes you think doesn’t it? But I think back then I would have absolutely loved it but tried to keep the pets out of harm’s way from the noise. Oh well. Patriotism or not… stay safe friends, if you’re in the UK or not!
