What I Did This Summer, By Kate Age Seventeen
At work a week or two ago my coworker and friend asked me what exactly I did this summer. I shrugged and said "you know, not much...yeah it's kind of embarrassing but it is what it is." And then I got to thinking, what did I really do this summer? Because obviously I had to do something besides running a blog. So then I started writing this. There's probably so many other little things I didn't mention. But it's nice to say I have some sort of ode to summer.
What I Did This Summer By Kate, Age Seventeen
This summer I saw my brother’s first home. This summer I discovered that boxer dogs barely have any fur. This summer I stumbled upon a free painting of a river. This summer my siblings and I threw my parents a surprise party for their 25th anniversary. This summer I heard stories about events that I’m too young to remember. This summer I made grilled cheese and drank with coca cola in a beer glass. This summer I trained two Pokémon teams and defeated the Elite Four each time-twice. This summer I stressed over student loans. This summer I level grinded until my eyes watered. This summer I read numerous books in one sitting. This summer I voted Ronmey 2102. This summer I created a semi popular blog dedicated to a Scrubs character. This summer I learned via the internet that I want Chris Carmack to be my new best friend. This summer I joined a Hair Club with him. This summer I killed invisible people in the parking lot. This summer a 2 year old woke me asking me what my pillow pet was, and then she sat in my lap and asked me to hold her. This summer I took part in a conversation about a sandwich with Tommy Siegel. This summer I screamed a song about stars to the stars with a few friends as we lied on a picnic table. This summer I questioned whether the stars were created to gaze at us. This summer I tweeted a few celebrities. They didn’t tweet back. This summer I went to Boston on my own and everything that could have gone wrong went wrong. This summer I attended college orientation and it was kind of horrible but at the same time got me really excited. This summer I read books about the Middle East. This summer I did myself a favor and found a way. This summer I listened to Bright Romans. This summer I got my first cell phone. This summer I realized that I few people to text on it. This summer I fell in love with fictional boys from Chick Lit novels. This summer I read more than one book on theatre, lesbians, and road trips and combinations thereof. This summer I finally got a debit card. This summer I missed my chance to pet a ginger kitty. This summer I smelled the great works of Eeks. This summer I square danced in a book store. This summer I fell in love with Americone Dream. This summer I shopped. A lot. This summer I worked. Not enough. This summer I hid in a basement from an imaginary tornado. This summer I turned my blog into one of those fancy blogs with tags. This summer I watched the sunset in the same place two nights in a row. This summer I spent two days roaming Church Street and sleeping on an air mattress. This summer I cried over Pictionary, or lack thereof. This summer I tried lavender lemonade. This summer I stared at water. This summer I spent an incredible amount of time with my sister. This summer I cuddle with my dog every night that I could. This summer I listened to the same mix tape about 27 times in a row. This summer I had a really awkward concert experience. This summer a waitress told me that it looked like “an animal had attacked” my dinner. This summer I escaped the cheating world of GeekSquad. This summer I fell in love with Delta Rae. This summer I pieced together Ben Thornewill’s love life. This summer I was traumatized by My Immortal Kidz Bop version. This summer I heard about LARPing and I’m still not sure I get it. This summer I was falsely accused of being a hipster blog. I even got a tag for it. This summer I gave relationship advice. This summer I hunted for Cryogonal with Bethany. This summer Bethany and I performed a synchronized swimming routine. We were flawless. This summer I also invited Bethany over to trade Pokémon and then we did everything but that. This summer I was given sass at a Starbucks so now I am boycotting the whole establishment. This summer I went to Sonic for the first time. This summer I spent all my mother’s money on Target. This summer I stayed up all night listening to Billie Piper and I don’t know how proud of that I am. This summer I played that song so loud because I wanted to. This summer I smoked fire. This summer I hugged Tanner Wilson shirtless which isn’t actually uncommon at all but I just love it when that happens. This summer I bonded with my dog which is a miracle in itself. This summer I rewatched. A lot. This summer my debit card was denied. This summer I accidently grabbed an XL off clearance when I was told it would be free. This summer I learned how to do a lot of Adult Things by myself. This summer I fucked up my internet in attempts to watch the Doctor Who premiere, then had like 3 panic attacks until I finally figure out how to fix it without having to admit to any one why my internet was broken. This summer I went to Meet Me on Main a lot. This summer I consequently fell in love with strawberry pancakes. This summer I spent an afternoon lounging in a park with Jess Rand and even with the bugs crawling up my legs it was really really wonderful. This summer I instagramed my first picture and it was of Jess. This summer I found a banana peel worth $5.24. This summer I debated the pronunciation of “Foucault.” This summer I had my haircut by a woman who looks just like Eve Myles. This summer I uncomfortably witnessed my father flirting with women. This summer one of those women happened to get her hair cut right next to me. This summer my last shift was a really awkward 4 hour shift and it was just really awkward. This summer I made a blog about the week everyone was in school when I wasn’t. This summer I would go to sleep with kids were going to school and wake up well after they had returned home. This was odd and quite shocking to me. This summer I got a sunburn from a very tiny car with very open windows. This summer I told off some idiot who tried to insult me for reading during the summertime. This summer I shared many Woman At Reception experiences. This summer I learned how to do laundry hoorah. This summer I calmed a panic attack by watching Phineas and Ferb. This summer I healed. This summer I was creepily represented as a frog. Sorry I know you won’t understand that sentence. This summer I fell in love with Slow Club, among many other musical artists.
This summer I did a lot more, too. You can’t expect me to be able to remember it all at once.
