Not everyone has the time or ability to read all the books, right? and I want to be super respectful of that. But the movies-- hell, even just the original trilogy makes it very clear that the Jedi Order is an organization, and you could just... not... be in it??? You could be missed when they take the younglings to training, or you could be forbidden to go.
In the Prequels it becomes even more apparent - Anakin is obviously force sensitive, but the Jedi Order refuses at first to train him. That would have meant he wouldn’t be a Jedi, he’d just be some super lucky dude. Like, Idk man, Han Solo perhaps???
I’d actually argue that Luke was only a Jedi because he called himself one, and that he was the first one to conflate “light-side user” with “Jedi.” Because it wasn’t like there was any fuckin club for him to belong to right? He may have gotten a crash course in Jedi training, but a handful of months in a Dagobah swamp does not a Jedi make.
