Review: The Horn’s newest single ‘Too Many Moments’ carries a hazy dreamscape of indie sound amidst a relatable message of life’s never-ending tasks

Steaming on from their anti-authority anthem ‘Another Way’ are London’s fast rising up-comers The Horn, a five-piece dominating the music scene after only forming just last year. With a tour supporting Starsailor under their belts within their first six months from formation, The Horn have not slowed down on their roll ever since, determined to prove that their Britpop-infused indie sound is one that none other can capture. Now sharing their second single of 2023, ‘Too Many Moments’, The Horn are eager to keep reaching new ears and we’re sure will only continue to propell their bombastic growth.

Warm and enchanting right from pressing play, the comforting bedding of indie-rock that The Horn encapsulate is nothing but a dreamy lining of feathery air and softened sheets, burying a nostalgic into the roots of every sound that soars through. Began with wispy, delicate electric guitar plucks, a subtle bassline and steady drum beats, ‘Too Many Moments’ is very much a subdued, atmospheric release right from the start, hazily leading you through an ebb and flow of sound that’ll leave you feeling like you’re resting amidst the clouds. Their vocalist’s easy-going delivery only further complements their sound, not pushing himself too strongly into the mix while each line carries a delicate reverberation along with it, lightly telling a poignant narrative while soaking into the sound as an instrumental piece himself. Picking up for the chorus with vibrant synth keys and a slight development of guitar, ‘Too Many Moments’ really reaches its spacious high, infusing indie, rock, synth and psychedelic textures for a sound you’ll never truly be able to hear anywhere else.

Though you’ll find yourself floating through its sound, ‘Too Many Moments’ lyrically captures quite the opposite of feelings, writing of feeling burdened by life’s never ending to-do lists and mentally weighed down by any attempts to progress. Universally relatable, the narrative woven into ‘Too Many Moments’ embodies all of the unfortunate realities of life, constantly trying to keep up with a seemingly never-ending list of relationships, responsibilities, problems, plans, emotions and through it all just trying to hold it together. As the lyrics unpack this heavy-bearing narrative, lines like ‘I’m screaming inside, for the life I left behind’ seem to yearn for younger days of irresponsibility and complete freedom, unburdened by the world's expectations that adulthood will hold over you. Further singing ‘taking a breather, coming up for air’ , it’s almost as though ‘Too Many Moments’ is a cathartically peaceful outburst of these growing strains, releasing the stress into a song you can just for a moment catch your breath inside of. Not only carrying our own struggles but also carrying those of all those that surround us, The Horn continue with ‘all of this time, your demons were always mine’, hauntingly expressing the way our day-to-day lives can snowball into a mass of not just our own woes but an unmanageable mix of everyone’s that we love. The choruses repetition of ‘too many moments’ continues to indicate an overwhelm that almost can’t be kept up with, as too many avenues seek attention at once and frankly ‘Too Many Moments’ has had enough of juggling this continual stream of insanity.

Adding to their message, The Horn say that “It’s about the madness, all the stuff good and bad that we are all engulfed in. Too much stuff around us, too many to-do’s, too much aggravation, too many people taking advantage of you, too much expected of you, too many responsibilities, too many lovers, too many big problems, too many small ones, too much fun, too many fun things to do, too many memories (good and bad), trying to hold it all together, pretending to hold it together…. I think! Or maybe its about something else.”
