Kaniehtiio Horn and Alexander Skarsgard in “The Hummingbird Project” coming to limited theaters on March 15th, 2019.
The Hummingbird Project (2018)
The Hummingbird Project is sort of a heist film, but not quite, meaning it has the benefit of not following any one genre’s tropes and staying unpredictable. Some of it is tonally uneven and needlessly sentimental but this little Canadian-Belgian provides some unexpected surprises.
Vincent Zaleski (Jesse Eisenberg) persuades his cousin, Anton (Alexander Skarsgård) to quit his job and embark on a High-Frequency Trading project that will make them millions. By creating a ruler-straight line of fiber-optic cables from Kansas to New Jersey, they'll be able to see stock price changes in 0.16 milliseconds and outrace the competition. This means drilling through mountains, obtaining permits, and dodging the fury of their former employer, Eva Torres (Salma Hayek).
There’s an emotional disconnect from the get-go and while you get over it in time, it must be addressed. This film isn’t about the poor stealing from someone rich. It isn’t even about someone that’s well-to-do righting some wrong by getting something that was theirs back. There really isn't anything illegal going on at all, per se. It’s about a couple of dudes embarking upon this crazy project so they can make more money than you or I could ever dream of because they’ll be making commissions from stocks who will be trading even more money than them. Whether our heroes win or lose, the little guys are getting nothing. If anything, they’re gonna get stomped on, as hustler Vincent sure isn’t going to take any “Nos” as answers. You sympathize for the cousins on a certain level. They’re good at what they do and Eva Torres is a witch… but when their solution to a drill bit breaking is “Guess we’ll have to fly one over from Russia for $80,000”, it’s hard to relate.
To humanize Vincent and Anton, they’re given their own dramatic arcs and these are a mixed bag. Sometimes it works and at other points, it just feels as though writer/director Kim Nguyen is trying too hard. EVERYTHING is going wrong with the line. That kind of problem you expect, even look forward to since it'll mean creative solutions. The dramatic stuff happening on their human scale though? it rings hollow.
Despite the obstacles, The Hummingbird Project slowly but steadily wins you over. The villain our heroes are against is despicable so you want them to beat her. The world of High-Frequency Trading is well broken down and digestible. While the outcome of the project may be on a plane you can’t even fathom, you do want to see it through and it ends on a high note.
The Hummingbird Project is nothing I'd rush to see. That doesn't mean you shouldn't check it out. There's good stuff here that'll keep you entertained while it lasts if the topic interests you. (Theatrical version on the big screen, March 26, 2019)
Reposted from @alexanderskarsgard_archive - Tonight is my anniversary of the first time I watched Alexander Skarsgård on TV. My first time was True Blood (episode 1.04) on January 8, 2010. I watched it on HBO on demand and was instantly hooked on the show but I wasn’t hooked on him until I finished watching season 2. (I watched season 1 in 3 days one weekend, and then I finished season 2 the following weekend in only 2 days.) After that was over I ordered the DVD set of Generation Kill and then watched his movie The Last Drop on Encore, and I have been collecting his projects ever since. What are your first Alex films/shows? Sources below are from his IMDb page. 📸: Copyrights to all rightful owners. Today is something of an anniversary for me. Ten years ago today I wrote and published my first ever personal blog post. It was on my blog Searching for Sustenance which I used as my very own investigation into the foods I ate, how they affected me, my health, and as the years went on — how they affected the world. It didn’t take long for me to stumble into various environmental efforts online and in person, and one event that I strive to participate in every year is #EarthHour. It’s a simple gesture of shutting off all our lights for one hour on the last Saturday of March in order to give our Earth a tiny breather, and for us to think of Her for once. The global event has grown over the many years it has been in place and has turned into a month long conversation about the things we can and need to do in order to enact change. The website earthhour.org can show you the events that may be going on around you, but I wanted to invite you to a Stop Writing Alone Earth Hour community event to #shareyourstories. One page on the Earth Hour site asks visitors to share their stories of how they are helping nature, or how nature helped them. I would like to invite you to write and contribute one such story to their site this year. I am going to use this year’s Earth Hour — March 28th 8:30pm — to write mine. I will do a little candlelight writing, focusing my energies on the Earth I hope to hug with this small gesture. It’s a tiny thing, but I learned from the hummingbird that even the tiniest efforts matter whenever each of us can show up and say, “I’m doing what I can.” #thehummingbirdproject https://www.instagram.com/p/B9pEQ8JhOXY/?igshid=zlkl37i1cf9y
