Finally a proper introduction to Nev (he/any) and Vele (he/him)! It's gonna be long

Lights are an artificially created species. Their bodies infused with sunlight were connected to those infused with darkness to counteract the destructiveness of the Sun. This way they started off with two kinds of lights: lights themselves and shadows. Linked to one another, they were condemned to live as servants and test subjects for the wealthy's convenience. The gods observing such blatant misuse of their power blessed the lights with the second chance. From that point onward when one light dies they get reborn as a shadow, saving someone else from being forcefully bound to the light and gaining a second chance at life. The only condition the gods set for such a blessing was that the shadows had a set amount of time given for them to better themselves before they could be fully reborn a light. After that is done the shadows are no longer bound to lights and can live for as long as they wish

Lights and their shadows somewhat share each other's needs for food and sleep, feelings and thoughts when needed. Sometimes lights and their shadows arrange who is doing most of what needs. Lights that have shadows have marks on their cheeks, once the shadow dies or gets reborn the marks disappear. Unlike all the other species, their bodies fully consist of magic

Vele is a child from a wealthy family. He was born without a star, an organ that is responsible for emotions, so his dad gave away his star for Vele. Although never lacking love and affection, Vele rarely truly could express himself, the star being alien to him and forcing him to feel things he could never put into words and work through. Vele, while being an active and cheerful kid, was also fully closed off. He never made connections with people outside his family, never felt the need to create bonds with humans. Then after the flash happened, he clinged to the only familiar person left

Vele might seem like a carefree thoughtless child at first glance. He routinely ignores people around, be it them asking him to do chores or scolding him, it takes a lot of patience to get him to cooperate. He likes cooking, catching (and releasing) frogs and looking at uncontained fire. In actuality this is just a child trying to cope with no words to express what is burdening him.

Nev came from an abusive family and died before reaching adulthood. He was a complete outsider, his first life spent at a place far away out of reach. A place so different that Nev isn't keen on mentioning it as to not get people convinced he imagined it. While at first being a welcomed addition to Vele's family, Nev later vanished following a talk with a shadow from the same area. He came back after the flash, sensing how disstressed Vele felt. Lacking any childcare experience Nev is trying his best to care for Vele

Personality-wise Nev is reclusive, he does anything to not interact with people around. His plans fall through as soon as Vele is left alone and are even more unobtainable once they get to Ann's house. To avoid human interaction as much as possible he acts bitter and mean, insulting others and getting on everyone's nerves

His biggest obsessions are books and especially libraries. Nev keeps reading everything he can get his hands on, a lot of the times he also writes down that knowledge that he remembers from that place.

Together they are siblings with an extremely rocky relationship. They are awfull for each other's health but they have no one else to rely on

Both the times he survived were because he was a light. A being with blessings of higher resilience and a second life, both the times he wished it all would finally end.

a brimmed hat with the sole goal of minimizing human impact on the world. keeping himself far from the world, he feels it protects the people around

it seemed the weird child Rainy (any) picked up from the woods wasn't concerned about getting back home in the slightest. on the contrary, he was quite comfortable being a pain, scribbling and carving incomplete spells into furniture. Rainy almost gave up attempts of helping him, until Vele ditched his hat and claimed he wanted to make his own, as detailed as he saw a stranger in the woods wear. maybe that's the clue! a stranger with a fancy hat you say...

somehow Nev looks even more miserable than he usually is. and Vele without the marks looks weirrdddd

a little abstract (?) art with saf. this one doesn't have a letter assigned to them, so uh. i might do it one day... the whole thing is kinda spoilery to the end of the story so i will not elaborate yet

although it may not seem that way, Tai isn't fueled by rage or revenge. he's actually the calmest and gentlest of the bunch. the only one who gets this treatment is Saf. she does deserve it though...
