Time: Noon, June 20th, day of The Address

Arthenni had started to see the effects of the war come in through Khaggon’s front door over the past few weeks. People from Llyn had come to take shelter, and she had heard many firsthand accounts of what had happened. It made everything feel a little more real, when the outside world was so blocked off by the stone walls around them.

Arthenni had been busy gathering up every little nugget of information and hearsay that she could come across. Some of it was exaggerations, rumors, less than true, but there was a lot of truth out there. And today she had set up a promising meeting. A meeting with one of the king’s men himself. What did he say he was, a bodyguard, a messenger? Maybe a little bit of both. Regardless, he was but a few steps removed from the king himself, and Arthenni was beside herself about it.

The crowds were closing in on where the council would be making their official address today. Arthenni had scheduled the meeting during this time, in a secluded location away from where the address would be held. Much less attention on them that way. She’d hear what the address had been about later, no doubt.

Arthenni had made sure to change before she had gotten too close to the meeting spot. Disguise Self was up, and she had completely changed herself to look like a pale red-head with one more foot of height. She had on a large black cloak that covered the majority of her form and anything underneath it. With the hood up, you could barely discern anything.

She kept to the far side of the plaza, staying as discreet as she could manage as she found the door to the meeting place. Once inside, that’s when the mask came out from under her cloak, which she affixed firmly over her head. It covered her entire face in a layer of deep royal blue and gold detailing. Sure, Disguise Self was good, but she was the type to have more than one layer of defense. Just in case. The last thing she wanted was to get caught in a trade this close to the king.

Time: Late evening, 20th July

If Thalra listened hard enough through the silence that permeated the room, she could hear the sound of laughter and music wind it's way up the stairs and under the crack in the door to the bedroom she and Arthenni were currently occupying. Thalra stood just behind the door so that if it opened, the person who entered wouldn’t see her at first glance. It was a deliberate choice, because if the person Arthenni said would be coming arrived and saw that Arthenni wasn’t alone, she’d be instantly suspicious and might try to run. Thalra didn’t want her to run, she wanted answers. And also, it would just be nice to see The Jade Raven again.

“Are you sure she’s even at this event?” Thalra asked Arthenni, her voice hushed. It had been hard enough ditching Nil to meet up with Arthenni but they’d also had to be incredibly careful getting up here, as security was on high alert. “Even if she is here, maybe she can’t get past the guards to this room. Maybe we should switch locations.” Thalra wasn’t sure why she was nervous, except that it felt strangely like an ambush to be waiting in this room for her mysterious Raven. It also felt as if she was going to learn more about the woman she’d been so curious about for so long, and that she might not like the answers she finally got.

Time: Early evening, June 19th

Thalra stood without moving as a stream of survivors, victims, soldiers, and all sorts of other exhausted, empty-eyed people shambled passed her, some in caravans, some on foot, some carrying each other. It was a pitiful sight, but she wasn’t completely heartless, not really. She knew what it was like to have a home snatched away so suddenly. When she could, she stopped the most wounded looking and sang a short healing word for them, and handed out the blankets and food she’d been provided with when she’d offered to volunteer to guide refugees coming into the city. There was a strange feeling in her gut she couldn’t name, and maybe did not want to name. She stayed quiet and didn’t say much.

That is, until she saw a familiar face.

The difference between The Jade Raven Thalra had met on that night of the eclipse and the one who moved through the crowd now was like night and day. It was clear she’d recently seen battle and that she’d traveled a long way with little rest. Thalra approached her slowly, more unsure than she usually felt.

“Hello,” She said, coming up beside her. “Do you remember me?”
