Her colleagues at the Gotham City Library had all moved on, but it had been surprisingly easy for Isabella to get her old job back on a part-time basis. She hadn't even needed to explain the two year gap in her resume. It was a relief to start to first shift. The library was familiar, and the scent of the place instantly took her back two years, as if no time had passed at all. She was sorting through the disorganised card catalogue when a young bespectacled man approached the desk. She turned to give him a friendly smile. "What can I do for you?"

A knock at the door of Wayne Manor was always a surprise, especially in the middle of the working day. Alfred had just settled down with a cup of tea while Bruce was off doing God knew what when someone rapped on the door sharply. He sighed, closed his book, put it on the coffee table, stood up, and marched to the front door.

When he opened it, he was greeted with a young man with a shock of bright red hair. It took him a second to realise where he'd seen the boy before. Jerome Valeska. Except, this lad was wearing glasses, and his face was still attached to his skull. Alfred straightened his back, and kept the door mostly closed, his posture guarded and tense. "Can I help you, sir?" he said, more roughly than he would normally.

They had been sitting in the main room of the bunker, in silence, for about half an hour. Ecco was reading one of the few books she owned, on business management strategies, to pass the time. Everything was different now, of course, and she had a feeling she would never take another phone call from one of Jeremiah's associates again, but she wanted something to do.

Jeremiah broke the silence, and Ecco looked up sharply. She smiled at the joke, but it still felt... unusual. She wasn't used to Jeremiah making jokes. "Oh, sometimes," she replied casually, folding down the page she was reading and closing the book. "If I've got nowhere better to be." She tried to match his playful tone, but it didn't sound as natural in her calm, lilting, voice.
