Apathy and boredom are very common emotions today. Influencing our choices, relationships and even down to our morals.
They are responsible for billion dollar industries such as video games, television, movies, smart phones, computers and many other distraction devises; fast food, fast service, quick fix diets and schemes. If that is not enough to manipulate or turn off your psyche, there are plenty of mind-altering drugs that can also do the job. They are responsible for the never-ending need for something new and shiny, bigger and better. It is an endless chase that can leave you broke and empty at the end of the day.
They affect our relationships with one another, causing a loss in a deeper connection. Without the ability to care fully and deeply about each other, we focus on physical attributes that make us feel better about ourselves, not engaging in the deeper meaning to our relationships. We become obsessive about our ideal partner and sabotage what we do have in place of the perfect body, car, job, and so it goes. Without that deeper connection, it is nearly impossible for a relationship to stand against stretch marks, hair loss, breakdowns and all the surprises life has to throw at you.
Apathy also holds the key to letting go and shutting down, not letting the news get to you or an argument you had earlier that day. Sometimes it is all we can do to make it through the day, to recharge and build strength for the days to come. Stresses, anxiety, grief, sadness and an array of many different emotions, if not managed properly, can become immensely hard to handle and overwhelming. Apathy is like a buffer to the body to help stabilize the psyche for survival, to get you through tormenting emotions.
If we can designate time and space to honour our apathy and be in flow, we will have the energy to dig deeper, love and spend quality time experiencing life at a more meaningful level.
