The Last Time I Saw

The project is a work of fiction. It aims to stretch readers’ creative muscles and let them think about what they would do if they were in such a dilemma. Life or Death, Greed or Integrity, Filial Piety or Pursuit of Dreams, Go with the Flow or Go against the Grain. What will be your choice?

Jenny’s Dilemma – What should she do?

Jenny and her little sister, Angel, had lived in a cozy cottage near the rainforest since their parents passed away ten years ago. They were poor and, therefore Jenny worked extremely hard every day to earn a living. Jenny was sad as Angel was seriously ill and needed surgery immediately. She was so desperate as she did not have enough money for the surgery, and she was so worried that her sister would die soon.

On a gloomy and windy morning, Jenny worked in the rainforest collecting latex from a rubber tree. Suddenly, she saw a wallet near the tree. She opened the wallet and found a lot of money inside. It was enough to pay for Angel’s surgery. The first thing that came to Jenny’s mind was to pick up the wallet, take all the money, and walk away. After a while, she remembered what her parents had taught her --- to be honest and act with integrity. Therefore, she went to the rainforest at once to find who had lost her wallet. 

She rushed into the rainforest and saw an old lady looking for something urgently. “Are you looking for a wallet?” she asked.

“Yes, young girl. It is a brown wallet with a yellow ribbon on it. Did you see it?” the old lady asked softly. “Here it is.,” she replied to the old woman and handed the fat wallet that was stuffed with banknotes to her.

The old lady was so grateful and offered her three wishes in return. Jenny was incredibly shocked that the old lady was a fairy. The first wish she asked for was money to pay for Angel’s hospital bill. She asked for the second wish to let her pay back the money in instalments. The third wish was to cure her sister’s illness.

The fairy waved her magic wand over some leaves, and the leaves turned into banknotes. Jenny was astonished to see the magical power of turning the leaves into banknotes.

She could not believe what she just saw. Jenny thanked the fairy and promised to repay the loan after her sister’s surgery. Jenny bowed her head to express her gratitude and bade farewell to her.

Angel underwent an operation and began to look and feel much better. Angel was getting stronger day by day. “Hey Jenny, please look at me. I have recovered and you do not have to worry about me anymore.”, said Angel excitedly. 

Jenny and Angel decided to leave and return home. Jenny went home and worked in the rainforest together with her sister, Angel. They worked industriously day and night. Fair enough, they kept the promise to repay the loan to the fairy. The fairy was pleased that they had returned to the rainforest in good health. Jenny and Angel lived healthily and happily ever after in the rainforest. This was the last time they saw the fairy.

What would you do if you saw a Hybrid Animal?

“Quick! Open the door!” Ryan yelled. A red-haired boy ran back home with a wounded monkey-headed frog in his hand on a cold and snowy morning.

Mrs. Lewis, the mother of Ryan, was sitting in front of a heater watching her favorite TV series, Suits on Netflix. Her dog Bella was napping on her lap. They stood up at once when they heard the shout. Bella was barking so badly, and Mrs. Lewis was worrying about what was wrong with Ryan. Something bad must have happened to him. Mrs. Lewis thought to herself. 

“What happened, Ryan?” Mrs. Lewis opened the door and asked anxiously to open the door. Ryan did not answer. He rushed to the bathroom and gave the hybrid animal a warm shower. 

Mrs. Lewis followed her son into the bathroom. She let out a scream as she saw the monkey-headed frog. “Oh my god! What the heck is this? I don’t want to see this WEIRD thing in my house.” Mrs. Lewis said angrily. Without looking at his mother, Ryan did not say a word. He was concentrating on the hybrid animal. Being a veterinarian is always the dream of Ryan. He pampered the little frog and wiped it with a dry cloth tenderly. 

Mrs. Lewis took a deep breath and tried to be calm as much as she could. “Are you listening, Ryan?” It’s nice of you to take care of animals, but it’s a monkey-based frog. It brings bad luck or even disasters!”

“Mum, you are too superstitious!”  He continued looking at the hybrid animal he had saved. Mrs. Lewis lost patience with her son. “I know I am not nice to this WEIRD thing but it can’t stay here.” Mrs. Lewis elevated her voice. She took the hybrid animal and walked to the front door. She threw it out and banged on the door. 

Disappointed, Ryan locked himself in his room. He turned on his laptop and started to google what type of hybrid animal it would be. Suddenly, he saw the monkey-headed frog appear. It was alive and waving at him. It was on Bella’s back. “Thanks, Bella. I am so glad that you have brought the frog back. Let’s give the frog a name. How about Jasper?” said Ryan softly. Bella waved her tail and Ryan treated this as a sign of agreement. 

After Mrs. Lewis finished watching her favorite TV program, she started to prepare their dinner. Later that evening, Mrs. Lewis knocked on her son’s door and said softly, “Dinner’s ready, I’ve made your favorite dish, spaghetti, and meatballs.” Nevertheless, there was no reply. Ryan was not in his room. Like many other children, he was mysteriously taken away and was never found. 

Mrs. Lewis cried regretfully. “If I had been more patient and cautious, I would have stayed with him, and we could have said our last goodbyes.”

Call off the Camping Trip or Continue the Trip As-Is?

Kate is a super fan of Kim Soo-hyun who plays the role of an extraterrestrial alien in the Korean drama, My Love from the Star. Her friends always wonder why she majors in Astronomy. Is it because she admires Korean stars, fancies aliens, or the natural beauty of our universe? 

Kate will never forget her first camping holiday. It was on a Wednesday when she went to the Astronomy Club 2-day summer camp with her friend Macy. Kate had heard a lot about the campsite in Yellowstone Park before her trip. Before they set off, Kate had expected to have a calm day so that they could enjoy the star observation activities. However, the weather was dreary. Unexpectedly, they still had a lovely camping holiday.

The minute they arrived at the campsite Kate realized how stupid she was to have misconceived the place. Contrary to what she had heard, its quiet dignity was impressive. She was impressed by its natural beauty. She could smell the fresh grass and listen to the birds’ chirp! “It is definitely music to my ears,” Kate said in a light-hearted tone.  Although it kept drizzling, they enjoyed playing there and pitching the tent together. What surprised them was that there was wildlife everywhere. They took close-ups of grasshoppers and butterflies. One of her friends, Jennifer saw squirrels too. It was fantastic to appreciate the glorious scenery, nature, and wildlife.

Soon, it was nearly time to prepare dinner, and they were faced with an unforeseeable challenge. The pieces of wood they collected from the campsite were all wet because of a rainstorm. They could not set a fire and cook. They waited for a few hours under the trees but the sudden storm showed no signs of letting up, which gave them long faces. All of a sudden, a big yellow cow appeared and tried to attack them. As they were escaping, they spotted a large bundle of dry wood in a cave. They finally realized that the cow was showing them the way to overcome their problem! “I can’t believe this will happen to us! It seems to me that someone has specially arranged this for us.” Macy said it in an astonishing tone. 

After putting great effort into cooking dinner, they were overjoyed to find that the sky was clear and thousands of stars were twinkling above their heads. The silvery moon beamed down. They lay on the soft grass, in close contact with nature. Kate hummed a little song and saw a shooting star travel across the sky. Kate and Macy immediately made a wish that they could enjoy observing the spectacular view of the stars and that the cow that had helped us could continue our camping holiday. A wonderful sense of calm fluttered down upon them.  When Kate and Macy looked back, they could not find the cow again. As always, cows often give people a feeling that they are living organism that possesses supernatural powers. Holy Cow? Believe it or not?

The City Of Brocken Dreams

Tomorrowland was cheering for its team’s inaugural participation in the West Football Tournament. There were banners and digital screens spread all over the city in support of the football team. Planes and jets flew over the city spraying blue and yellow color, marking the shift of the team’s home color from blue and green. The Building of Hope, the city’s tallest building, didn’t shy away from the pride it took of the team’s first ever involvement in the most prestigious tournament in the west side of planet 404. The building displayed the team’s journey through the past, from just a mid-table team to winning back-to-back titles in the league. In turn, large ballistics were shot in the sky pouring out celebration ribbons.

The last time the citizens saw and cherished this beautiful city was before the East Dome decided to attack the state. The East Dome was a powerful state that had entered talks with Tomorrowland for its inclusion in the East. This would mean that the water resources had to be shared with the East despite the fact that the reservoir fell under the Tomorrowland territories, one of the many oppressing demands. The inability to accept the demands resulted in war. The plane carrying the football team en route to the Versitaly port in the mid-east region of Tomorrowland was shot down by the missiles launched by sector 3000, allies to the East. No one in the plane survived and this announced a greater warfare between the two states. 

Tomorrowland was a rich state with one of the most developed architectures. However, the poised state lacked numbers in troops and nuclear arsenal. The states battled against each other but the aid of the East’s allies meant a very short end to the battle: the battle which Tomorrowland lost. In the process, Tomorrowland lost nearly 80% of its soldiers and more than 60% of their land military-grade vehicles destroyed. The city once loved by their citizens was now just a battle ruin.  Bullets peeped through the houses and complexes. Buildings shattered by mortar and air raids. Roads are cracked and depressed and the lush green vegetation turned black as a result of mass destruction.  The white architecture lost its original appearance due to napalm and the Building of Hope just a portion away from being any regular double-story apartment. 

Those who had strong connections fled the state before the war began. But, high numbers of not so fortunate located hiding places around the city. If lucky enough, the bombs would skip over these places but many weren’t. The streets were full with dead bodies and cut limbs. The massacre pelted holes in the hearts of those who survived. The last time the survivors of the war saw their vibrant city now seemed like a fairy-tale (or a distant memory). Little did they imagine their city being rebuilt into this new and rehabilitated version of their city.

This was in stark difference to what they were seeing now. Voices of babies crying, children searching for their mothers, and people searching for their loved ones echoed in the city of broken dreams. The loss of their loved ones and past life was momentarily forgotten but the blemish of war could never be forgotten. The people chose to build back their lives on the remnants and crumbles of a recent war while the rest of the world watched.

My Last Interaction With My Granny

Rahul was very close to his grand-mother who was his angel in a divine white dress. Rahul had been living with his grandma since he was a child. The town of Karaikudi was just like any other village in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Rahul’s parents had moved to the metropolitan city of Chennai which had huge scope in the business and technology sector. His parents left him with his grandma as the city life was itself a new experience for them. They would come back to take him and his grandma to the city once they settled there and had a secure source of income.

Rahul lived with his grandma in the village for over 4 years and became accustomed to the daily life. His grandma would wake him up in the morning for school and help him bathe to ensure water was not overused. She would heat the chullah and prepare rice and daal for him. She would add freshly cooked roti in the tiffin on Tuesday’s or on festive occasions. Rahul’s grandma would iron his school shirt and trousers and help him wear the school uniform. Tie his shoelace and comb his hair, Rahul was ready to leave for school. His grandma would accompany him to the school, drop him, and head towards the temple. She would spend hours chanting the hymns until the temple’s bell rang, which happened at 3 pm.

On her way to school to pick Rahul, grandma would take the dried rotis and fresh grass produce and feed them to the stray dogs and cows near the school. Rahul would see his grandma and ask for some rotis to help his grandma. The time after school was peaceful. Rahul would finish his homework and take his grandma to the nearby park where he would play with his friends and his granny would meet and talk with the temple priest and other grannies. On their way back to home, granny bought fresh vegetables and prepare the best home food Rahul could ever eat. This was like a daily pilgrimage for Rahul and his grandma.

The last time Rahul saw his grandma was before his parents took him to the city. Adjusting to the city life was tough for him as his daily partner- granny, was no longer there. Rahul faced difficulties in making friends and couldn’t perform any other task except for studying. The wake-up calls, eating with family, food, journey to school, and reading of the prayers, were always on the go his parents had a mobile job. Food was no longer prepared at home so Rahul started eating in the school cafeteria. His new school followed Christian rules and prayers, meaning he no longer sang the Hindi prayers. 

The last time Rahul saw his grandma was the last time he could see granny in the tranquil white dress, hair like a white snow, with aging skin looking thinner, paler, and clear. His companion was lost due to granny’s untimely but somewhat expected departure. Rahul could not say his final goodbyes.

The Wish To Meet Again

It has been over 3 years since Kyle last saw his children. Kyle has been in the US army for the past 8 years and was deployed in the active combat range unit tasked to keep tabs on the Iraqi Intelligence Unit 3 years back. His team was responsible for transfer protocol of intel that could keep the US military updated of the Iraqi specialized forces and the necessities of the guerilla warfare. This meant that Kyle had to be super alert and updated through the locals and insiders as the US government relied on this information to carry out peace talks and attacks, if things went hay-wire.

Kyle kept the pictures of his wedding and his kids on the nightstand drawer. He would wake up at 5 in the morning and look over the pictures, place them near his heart and sometimes even kiss them. The pictures gave him warmth of a hug and mouthful of kisses and love. The last time Kyle saw his family was when Gina was born. Given a two-day leave under the family emergency rule, Kyle was granted permission to travel to the States for the birth of his daughter. His wife Kiera was already in labor and about to give birth to their daughter. That was one of the last times Kyle had a peaceful talk with his wife, in a long while.

Kyle would time and again call his wife and talk to her and his daughter but physical distance was something that could not be solved by a rectangular frame on electronic gadget. The wavering reality of a digital presence left a deep crevice on Kyle’s relationship with his wife. Waking up and seeing the beautiful face of his wife, preparing breakfast and coffee for her before she left for her work, picking up his wife from near her office building, going out on dates with her and having a laugh at the bar, enjoying the sunsets near the villa across the mountain top, going out for fun little road trips, the growing of his daughter, resting Gina by his arms while she cuddled around sucking her finger in the modest of way, hearing the first little words from his daughter’s mouth, the first steps of his daughter, the first calling of “dada” to her father, and taking Gina to the park and picnics were just some of the things Kyle wished he could have done.

The last time Kyle visited his home, there were window panes that struggled to close because of the moisture the woods absorbed due to the rain season. The carpet at the lobby had a slight tear and the plaster on the wall started to come out. Rosco, their dog, had scratched the walls with his nails. These were the things that made Kyle feel at home. The gun firing, shell blasts, night screams, operation pseudo runs, heavy guard armor, emergency alarms had shaped Kyle’s mind in the opposite direction to peace. Hope to meet his family again was what made him wake every morning.

Will This be the Last Time I See You?

I couldn’t believe you broke up with me. Feelings of shock and disbelief shook my body as I sobbed uncontrollably into your chest. I tightened my hand around the fabric of your shirt, clinging onto any part of you I could reach. I broke down as I relived our greatest memories over and over, thinking about the last time you told me you loved me. If you had told me that that would be the last time, I would have asked you to yell it at the top of your lungs, to sing it to me as I lay in your arms, and I would have asked you to tell me how much you meant it, to promise that our love was forever. You left me with nothing. Not an explanation, not a solution. I begged on my knees for the reason I thought I deserved, yet never received. But how was I supposed to accept that I was never going to get the closure I needed, that I may never know the answers to the millions of questions that keep me up at night? Why did you leave? When did you stop loving me? I cried myself to sleep, scared that I may forget your face. But what if you had already forgotten me? I couldn’t say the thought of that didn’t twist my stomach into knots. You told me it was “over” but how was I supposed to know if you knew the real definition of "over". I still wonder if you knew that over meant forever. I couldn’t help but explore the possibilities of what “over” could mean to you. Did you mean that “over” was temporary? Was “over” like the many “breaks” we had taken in our relationship before? Was "over" still implying that we would one day reunite? That whatever you have with Sally, will be something you get over? A phase? You have her now, but how long do I have to wait till you’re over her? How long until you realize that all you have ever wanted in a human being is in the very same place you left her months ago. I waited for you. I waited for you to realize you would always be mine, realize how hard it was for me to live without you, I realized then that you only ever looked forward. You only ever put your focus on the present, and I wondered if you would one day remember me, remember us, and finally turn your focus into our past. Before all this, you had always said we were a team. I hope you will remember how I dedicated my life to you only to have you leave me with nothing, yet I still held onto the sliver of a chance for months. I hope that you will one day remember the day we ended, and think about how happy we once were, only for us to become a faint memory. I held onto us for as long as I could, yet the reality of us forced me into the present. I don’t have any more questions but one, will that day be the last time I saw you?
