The Apprentice by Buland - 1883.
This is a wonderful example of what real art is like. The near-photographic quality of the painting is simply amazing. That the artist took the time to get such detail really gives us a window into another time. Modern “art” isn’t art because it intentionally holds to no standards so it can’t be objectively judged. Eugene Buland welcomed judgement and stands proud, no doubt.
For the blacksmith, this is a great painting because it helps identify equipment and techniques in use at the time. I certainly wouldn’t mind having a drill like that in my little corner of the world!
