Sheila Pree Bright is an artist who uses Barbie Dolls to showcased photographs of Barbieâs to show the racist and sexist standards of dolls throughout her series âPlastic Bodies.â
I really like how she portrays the doll as a real human. The images above look as if it should be a real person with long hair and jeans on as if itâs a fashion shoot and Barbie is the model. This I believe is a good match for me to research into as she is using Barbieâs similar to me and using them to show sexism whereas mine is being used to show objectification.

Destricted
When watching the Larry Clark Interviews on Destricted they exhibited opinions of young men who were asked if they would like to have sex with a porn star. One said remembering a pornographic film he watched âShe was really tiny and he was so big he like, broke her in half. That really got me off.â Implying he enjoyed the idea of this woman being so small and frail the man could have his way with her regardless of what she wanted. Highlighting she would be powerless and an object for enjoyment. This indicates this young man enjoyed looking at that woman as a small and weak creature. Similar to a toy you wouldnât care for with emotion. Another young man said, âI donât find it degrading at all the only people who do I think are embarrassed by themselves because theyâre overweight or not pretty, so they feel ashamed.â This shows us he doesnât find anything wrong with women being looked at in pornography even though the scenes or imagery might be degrading or sexually objectifying, because it turns him on. Disregarding womenâs feelings just because he assumes theyâre ânot pretty.â Women may find pornography degrading for a number of reasons such as they feel like theyâre not been seen as humans with emotions, desires or opinions like men are. Another mentioned he would enjoy âaggressive, loud, anal sex with hair pulling and bitingâ These remarks made by a young man who is the future of our generation could have a big impact on how women are treated in society. This could increase rape and sexual assault as their opinion majorly insinuates they donât care about a womanâs consent, opinion or feelings due to the aggressive or sexual nature they have towards women suggested by that statement.
This is an extract from my first draft of my dissertation which I didnât use in the final one I submitted for grading. It explains the Larry Clark interviews on Destricted.
My Process Book: Gender & Intimacy by Lauren Travers (2019)
I am really pleased with the outcome of my process book. Intimacy is conveyed through the size of the book. Its small and compact nature makes the viewer want to hold it close to the body to read.

Book inspirationÂ
I have decided to go for a perfect bound book when I come to print off my process book. I think it matches the clean simplistic design I have created for my book. My work also has a simplistic design to it also so I think this is a good idea.Â
I am highlighting the position of women in relation to objectification. Whilst researching the link between objectification and object. Combining the use of the Barbie doll I have utilised the process of photography to infer how women are being displayed and how this links to objectification.
