Fanart for themeatly’s Bendy and the Ink Machine! Happy #Toonsday? I dunno if what Bendy is can even qualify as a toon anymore...
That One Tape...Yes...You Know the One...
Ah yes, the “indiscernible” tape. Not all that important it seems like, but yet nobody knows what it’s meant to be. Some say it’s Grant Cohen’s transformation into an ink creature, as told by the game’s coding:
And I don’t think it’s an impossible idea. In fact, it seems to be one of the most factually-backed ideas concerning the tape. However, I did notice something weird.
Now, I know nothing about game coding. I’m not sure what TEMP means in a coding sense, but I’m going to go with “temporary”. That combined with the fact that the other tapes surrounding don’t have this keyword at the end, I’m also going to go ahead and assume that the “TEMP” variable only affects Grant’s tape. (I noticed that “CH” and “AudioLog” are capitalized unlike the other tapes, but I don’t think it’s all that relevant.)
But what I’m proposing is...that this tape is meant to have a different title.
I’m not saying it’s anything that big, but I’m thinking that at least one word must be swapped out or one word is yet to be added. Something that’s just enough to screw with our minds. I don’t think that TheMeatley or other devs are “hiding” the tape’s title from us entirely, but I don’t think that it’s currently at the right title.
It’s also important to note that TheMeatley has changed things with Grant’s name before. The initial achievement for CH5 originally titled “Grant Puppeteer” was later changed to “Grand Puppeteer”.
(Although this is cited to have been a “mistake” It’s not likely that you could very easily mis-type “t” instead of “d” without smashing any of the other keys by mistake.) At the very least, I think it was meant to play with our heads.
And jumping off this point, I want to propose...something else.
So, the Grant tape can be broken down into several parts chronologically:
-Lots of gasping
-(presumably) Glass breaking
-Enemy noises (a few Butcher Gang noises, including an attacking and an idle noise)
-A voice (or groan)
-A guttural scream
-A splatter of ink, ink dripping
-A deep breath/growl (monster-like)
-Another splatter of ink
So, right off the bat, almost everything seems to check out. In line with the Butcher Gang theory, Grant seems to be a viable candidate. Except, there are two parts that don’t really add up- one being the glass, the other being the growl towards the end. I don’t know about the glass, since it doesn’t really make sense in terms of the ink machine, but considering the fact that Grant probably stumbled around and/or turned into something big, let’s say he knocked something over. The only thing missing is where the low growl came from, if he really turned into a butcher gang member. So this would either have to mean that:
A. Grant transformed into something else entirely.
or
B. Grant transformed into a monster version of....whichever butcher gang member he is.
And the monster thing wouldn’t really be that much of a stretch. There’s a searcher “boss” that’s essentially a “monster searcher”, so we know this type of creature is possible in terms of the BATIM universe.
As for Grant transforming into something else entirely...well...
I’ll admit, it would be not only pretty cool, but it would explain where one of the more minor characters went. Only problem is that the Butcher Gang only has one more person we know left, and that would be Shawn. So in this case, I can only see a tape revealing 3 new characters, or 3 new character tapes spread out over chapter 5. If chapter 5 is long in comparison to what we’ve got so far, I think they could very well be put in somewhere. If you think about it, that would only be 3 tapes or possibly 1 tape altogether, because if they are introduced that late, then they would be minor characters anyway.
But...what if the tape was meant to be someone else entirely?
Like...well...Joey?
I can already hear the internal groans of everyone reading this, but hang on.
So, if you review the entirety of the tape, there are only two things that don’t fit.
1- the glass
2- the enemy noises
The glass can easily be explained away again. Joey knocking something over while transforming is entirely possible. But what about the butcher gang noises?
The ending screen from Chapter 3.
It really doesn’t seem to have any important bearing on the story so far. The only thing it really tells us, in combination with the fact that they try to “pull Alice back” into the ink, is that they are possibly on Bendy’s side.
But without a shadow of a doubt, the butcher gang clones and other monsters such as searchers would have been around for Bendy’s creation.
Think about it! As you travel further and further into the belly of the studio, you get bombarded with more ink and more enemies. The ink machine is quite literally the womb from which everything in the studio is created, so it would make sense for there to be a plethora of monsters down wherever it’s docked.
So the noise isn’t directly from the person recorded on the tape.
“But what about the file name?”
Like I said, I think the file name is going to be changed. I don’t think Meatley would do something like “OH right btw it’s called joey_transformation now have fun”, but I do think that he’ll change it up. Maybe change it to Grand Transformation...something minor like that.
But the final nail in the coffin is that there’s a part of the tape that distinctly sounds like Joey’s voice.
And it’s not like I’m grasping for straws, either. I made a dumb post right before this where I put the audio from the “Indiscernible Tape” right next to the audio from the “Demon Route Tape”, but it actually pretty much highlights what I’m talking about. There’s not really much else it could be other than a weird groan. Which...isn’t really all that compelling.
It’s a positively silly thought, but it’s one way to try and explain the mysterious events around Chapter 4′s “Indiscernible” monster.
