This is the actual video I used to help me come out to my own mother. I, myself know quite a lot about the non-binary identity, but I’ve never been able to correctly describe how the term “trans” didn’t just mean FtM or MtF. This video finally gave me a good analogy to use!  :)

Coming Out While Being Christian | Pansexual & Demigender 

I chose to focus on Demigender. I found this video to be very wonderful! They talk about their experience to come out as a pansexual demigirl and what it was like talking through it in a way that also lets them share their religious views. Although I am personally more spiritual than I am religious, I still found this to be interesting. I love at the end when they say they say their identity is in god as a display of how truly close they are to Christianity. I understand that typically (although not always) when people come out to their parents there is always that chance of negativity, hate, bias (being afraid of something they are unfamiliar with) risk. Overall I am glad this person was able to come out so beautifully and to make this beautifully edited video to share to the public. Amazing.

Ma-Nee Chacaby talks about Two Spirit Identities

I was already familiar with the general concept of Two-Spirit identities when I looked at our assignment. That being said, this video was a great insight to Ma-Nee Chacaby’s personal experience as a Two-Spirit person. What strikes me in this video is hearing about someone who isn’t cisgender growing up with a very supportive family who recognized and respected their gender very early on. Unfortunately this is not the norm for a lot of people.

I wanted to hit on genderfluid, due to it actually being the first gender I identified with back 6 years ago when I started questioning my gender identity as a whole. The definition and understanding of it has grown immensely since then, but I think it’s good to show that gender does NOT fit into one or another binary. It is fluid and can change day to day, month to month, etc. It is all personal and should be respected no matter the labels associated. Genderfluid does not just include male and female presentation, but the presentation and expression of multiple gender identities.

What I gathered from this video of what Two-Spirit is and where it has come from really made me open my eyes even more to how the Indigenous tribes were stripped from their traditions, and even spiritual teachings and ways of life after the Europeans came in. Thankfully with the help of elders and those keeping the traditions despite everything being against them they were able to keep records and stories of those who are and and had been Two-Spirit. Two-Spirit is highly regarded in Indigenous tribes of those who recognize it still, and very sacred. Some of the roles these Two-Spirit people took were roles of match-makers, medicine people and even warriors. Some Two-Spirit people even did roles for both masculine and feminine. To keep their culture we need, as non-Indigenous folx, to stop taking these terms and learn to respect these traditions and cultures. They are sacred, they are highly regarded. With that though each tribe who recognizes Two-Spirit people have also different terms for gender roles, expression, identity and even sexuality. (I am not Indigenous I just want to show my knowledge and respect)

Rain Dove is nonbinary. Nonbinary is not being strictly male or female. In a different video, Rain describes it as simply being I. I chose this video instead because it gives a slow progression visually of being nonbinary. Rain talks about how clothing is not gendered even though our society makes it seem that way. Nonbinary is being who you are in the moment right now. From moment to moment, that may change.
