Our first Vancouver nacho review! We decided we wanted to go for some no frills nachos this time. And we def got it. The Naam is an awesome place - vegetarian and vegan options, fucking delicious ass homemade pie, and, of course, nachos! The nachos here were overall very standard. This is the place to go when you just want a good ol' plate of nachos. (plus they're open 24 hours so uh drunk nachos? yes please)
Naam Nachos - overall rating = 3.5/5
Here's our breakdown!
Sex appeal: 1/5 - not the sexiest nachos, pretty basic and average looking. It might've gotten a 2 since the cheese actually looks delicious but some chips were burnt! phff
Ingredient coverage: 4/5 - preeeetty good coverage. Quite a bit of cheese on these babies. but seemed like there was maybe 5 tomato pieces?
Price to volume: 3/5 - $18.25 - a little bit on the expensive side but its a large serving and was easily shared as an appy between three people (we didn't even want an entree after, just some pie!) guac was an extra $4.25 though!!!
Flavour: 4/5 - cheese. 'nuff said.
Dip quality: overall 4/5
Guac - 5/5 - worth the $4.25 in the end. so tasty and a good portion
Salsa 4/5 - pretty unique salsa. it had a strong cumin flavour that I personally kind of hated but the other two loved it so majority rules.
Sexy tortilla times x2 at Velvet Cantina, San Francisco, CA
Uhh so in case you didn't already know, San Francisco is fucking awesome. But what's even more awesome than San Francisco? Nachos. Naturally, our entire 6 day stint in #sanfran was spent seeking out the absolute best and most uniquely delicious nachos in all the land. And where did this journey lead us, you ask? Ah, yes. It led us to Velvet Cantina where we were in for a very sexy and fucking delicious surprise.
But in all seriousness, this place was great all around. We'd definitely hit it up again when back in the city and highly recommend it to anyone looking to have a good time. It has great atmosphere, a kind of sexy feel to it. Great food, service, margaritas and sexy people all around. Such fun, much tasty.
Anyway, let us begin.
ROUND ONE!
Velvet Nachos with chorizo - overall rating = 4.25/5 + 1 bonus point
Sex Appeal: (first because the most important aspect of nachos, obviously)
Rating= 3/5. The presentation of these nachos was actually pretty good, as shown in the picture. Basically the ultimate nacho pile, layers of cheese, black beans, chorizo, drizzled with sour cream, sprinkles of green onion and a nice plop of guacamole in the middle. As appealing as it was when it was presented to us, once we dove in, shit got real messy. WARNING: not a good first date meal! But then again if you share these and have the time of your life getting messy chorizo and sour cream all over your face, it's probably truluv. It got pretty soggy towards the end too which was kind of a turn off. However, it didn't stop us from devouring every last chip (plus the extra free chips they give you!!)
Ingredient Coverage:
Definitely an important aspect with nachos; nobody wants to get that lonely cheese-less tortilla chip!
Rating = 4/5
These nachos had pretty awesome ingredient coverage. The cheese and toppings were spread out preeeetty nicely. However, the guacamole piled in the middle of the nachos made it just a tad difficult to get the right amount of guac. You either ended up having a hard time scooping it up, or had a chip piled high with it (mmm...guac.)
Price to volume:
Money ain't nothing but money and money can't buy you love. But it buys you nachos, so you better be sure you be getting your moneys' worth.
Rating = 5/5
$14.00 USD including added chorizo, salsa and guacamole. Plus extra free chips at the table.
Flavour:
Rating = 5/5
SOOOO GOOODDDD.
Dip Quality:
Guacamole = 3/5. We've had better.
Salsa = 5/5. Mm nothing better than salsa at an authentic Mexican restaurant, am I right?
5/5. A perfect score for this beautiful display of tortilla chips drizzled in milk chocolate, sprinkled with cinnamon and topping with mini marshmallows which were blow-torched in front of us at our table to give them that yummy campfire s'mores-esque quality.
Ingredient Coverage:
4/5. Fairly good coverage of chocolate and cinnamon. The marshmallows were kind of clumped to one side of the plate but using a technical sandwich technique with the chips mostly solved this problem.
Price to volume:
5/5. At only $6.49 USD, it was the perfect size to satisfy three people after dinner. Definitely a sharing dessert.
Flavour:
5/5. They're dessert nachos so clearly they were fucking delicious. The restaurant used a thicker more savoury tortilla that worked excellent with the cinnamon and chocolate sauce.
Dip:
N/A
Bonus Points:
1 for the dessert novelty. It was actually what drew us to this place. A lot of places do nachos, and a lot of places do nachos well. But dessert nachos? That's special.
1 more bonus for the fact that they blow-torched the marshmallows for us at our table. It's like at the Rainforest Cafe when you order the Volcano and all the servers yell out VOLCANO!! and everyone looks at your table with envy at your delicious giant dessert. Pretty sweet show.
