Batik, pronounced bəˈtēk, is a traditional technique of producing hand-dyeing fabrics originating from the island of Java.
Our artisans use wax as a dye repellent to cover parts of a design, using color dyes to produce the desired patterns. Each and every piece of batik we produce is unique and individually handpainted, often through a series of trial and error. It’s a journey involving endless imagination and creativity.
At FERN we are constantly seeking inspiration for new pattern designs which will change the perception of traditional ‘batik’ in people’s eyes. We aim to modernize this wonderful piece of artwork which carries years of history, evolving it into a form of wearable art, while continuing the batik legacy.
We strongly believe that great quality products go a long way. With that in mind our artisans are always on the prowl for top notch materials to ensure the quality of our masterpieces. Each pattern design is limited to only a few pieces, making each collection exclusive and unique.
The Autumn/Winter 2015 is our first solo collection of batik prints. The Marble Effect, The Snowfall Prints, The Paintbrush Effect and The Snow Mountain Effect, all inspired by the amazing Japanese landscapes and the calming and serene nature experienced by our founder Fern Chua.
These textures are only the beginning of a new batik legacy.
