In the end McKenna lost their little game and she had to chuck her drink. They played a couple of rounds more and by the end McKenna was pretty drunk.
“Well, Bella, I think it’s about time we get you home” Tom said as he signaled for the bartender to call a cap for them.
McKenna was dancing to the background music, twirling around with a half empty glass of a cocktail. “I don’t wanna” She responded, followed by a little hiccup. Tom giggled, “Well, Bella... We kind of have to, the bar is closing and your drink is empty. I’m sure your little man is wanting to see you too, Topolina” He grabbed her by the shoulder and stopped her from twirling so hard, she would spill her drink and fall on her face.
“Theo?...” McKenna asked.
“Yeah, Theo” Tom answered, sending her a big and comforting smile.
McKenna lit up for a bit, thinking about her little fluffball. She missed him. The neighbors kids had promised her to walk him and play a bit with him while she was gone. Did he miss her too? wasn’t it more fun playing with the kids?
McKenna all of a sudden felt sad, the thought of Theo not missing or loving her hurt. her eyes sought Tom who was now returning from the bar where he had payed their bill and left his car keys in their safety box.
He looked good, his cheeks were slightly rose-colored from the drinks and his lips seemed plump and ready to be kissed. His hair was a little rumpled from him running his hands through it every time he lost and McKenna teased him. She was captivated by him and she began to wonder what kissing him would be like. It would probably be amazing. She felt like she had to try and before she knew it she was leaning towards him.
“You’re ready? The Ca...” Tom asked, when he reached McKenna, but before he could finish the sentence, McKenna was leaning toward him, eyes closed and ready to be kissed.
He stepped back a little surprised and softly rejected her advantages. This was not the right time or place to share a first kiss. Besides both of them was buzzed and McKenna deserved more than just a drunken kiss. She was too special to him, to become another drunken conquest and by the way he was feeling at the moment, he would not be able to stop himself if they locked lips.
Tom had always found her incredibly beautiful and attractive from the first time he had laid eyes on her, playing her guitar at the protest at city hall. At first he had just wanted to simply pick her up and have some fun with her. That was somewhat normal for him, whenever he saw a cute girl and was single. But as they had gotten to know each other more and more over time. He had come to realize just how special and delicate McKenna truly was and his desire to conquer her had disappeared and been replaced with a strong desire to protect her. She had the most amazing smile, that filled the room with warmth and light, like sunshine on a summers day. She had a unique ability to always make him feel happy and contempt when they were together. They could chill on the couch, with a movie and a pizza and he wouldn’t be bored like he would with most other women. She was captivating, just by being herself. She was so pure and romantically inclined, it was clear she had a big heart and loved hard. She was like a cute, shy little mouse begging for him to put her in his hearts pocket and protect her from all the evils in the world.
No... McKenna was too special to just become a drunken hookup.
McKenna however didn’t take the rejection that well. She was embarrassed and her whole head was turning red. She felt so stupid, why did she jeopardize their friendship like that? She felt her eyes begin to overflow with tears. Mortified she stepped back and couldn’t help but start to cry.
She felt like her world was crumbling down around her. This night was awful, Theo didn’t love her or miss her and now she had forever embarrassed herself and ruined her friendship with Tom. What was next? She’d pee herself? Would be typical. All she wanted was to run away and hide in a hole somewhere, but just as she was about to turn around and sprint for the nearest exit, Tom had grabbed her arm and pulled her into a giant warm hug. He began to stroke her hair and whispered softly and calmly into her ear in Italian. McKenna couldn’t resist the urge to lean into the hug and let her tears fall on his shoulder.
“I’m... *Hic*... So sorry, Tom!” She cried, “I don’t know why I did that *Hic*... I... I... Don’t know”.
Tom kept stroking her hair and pulled her in tighter. She sniffled and buried her face even deeper into his shoulder. At least he couldn’t see how shamefully red her face was this way.
“Shh... Topolina, It’s alright” Tom whispered, “Don’t be sad, you didn’t do anything wrong. This is just not the right time or place, Bella”.
Tom’s gentle voice and hug was working their magic and McKenna was beginning to calm down a bit.
“Lets get you home, Bella” Tom said as he placed his arm around her shoulder, grabbed her jacket and guided her towards the exit, where their cap was waiting.
McKenna nodded and stared at the floor. Her eyes never met Tom’s the rest of the night and when the cap stopped in front of her house, she quickly muttered a simple goodbye and ran inside before Tom could respond. She was so embarrassed about the whole situation and a little sad about his rejection. It had hurt her more than she cared to admit.
That night McKenna cried herself to sleep while Theo licked her tears away from he face and snuggled up closely to her.
