Your enemy, Peter, read your diary in front of the entire Dauntless faction. Exposing your feelings for Tobias Eaton, your mentor, you have to deal with the consequences of your words as Tobias comes to confront you.
Warnings: a few cuss words.
A/N: The Divergent series is one of my favourite book and movie series of all time! I decided to start writing about Tobias seeing as he’s my favourite character, even thought it isn’t what I usually write. I hope you all enjoy!
“Hey” a familiar deep voice spoke up from behind you. You squeezed your eyes shut, covering your face in your hands as you dreaded the conversation that was about to take place. No words came out of your mouth as you opened it, so you kept it shut, deciding not to say anything at all in hopes that he would go away.
Peter had just stolen your diary from under your pillow and read it to everyone in the cafeteria, exposing your feelings for your mentor, Tobias. And now, luckily for you, here he was. Fuck.
You feel him sit down next to you, sighing as he did so. “Okay, good to see you too” He jokes, trying to lighten up the mood. You turn to face him, biting your inner cheek. “What are you doing here, Four?” You sigh, not having the mental capacity to play his games. His hands were held together in a fist, arms resting on his thighs as he faced the ground.
As soon as he heard that name leave your lips, Tobias turned around to face you with what looked like hurt. He looked taken aback, you were the only person who didn’t call him by his ‘nickname’, the only person who he had opened up to and told his real name to. Nonetheless, you were the only person who he wanted to call by his real name.
Tobias looked into your eyes, searching for any sign of regret after you said that, but he didn’t find any. He furrowed his eyebrows, “I- Uh, I heard Peter’s little speech in the hall”. You let out a sarcastic laugh to cover how upset you felt. “God, Wow. That’s great! So now everyone in Dauntless knows everything I wrote in that stupid diary, that’s just great” You let out sarcastically.
Tobias purses his lips, feeling guilty even thought it wasn’t his fault. He couldn’t bare the sight of you looking so helpless, because of Peter. God, did he hate Peter.
“You know what? Can we just skip having this conversation? I already know how this is going to turn out Four, okay-” You start but he cuts you off by slamming his hand down on the metal bench you were sitting on. “Stop fucking calling me that, Y/N” Tobias warned, clenching his jaw. It scared you how his voice always stayed low, he never yelled. If he yelled it would be less scary, in yours and Christina’s opinion.
The brave face you put on almost faltered, but you refused to let it show. You already felt like jumping off the rails and throwing your body into the chasm, like Al, so this confrontation wasn’t making it any better. “I can’t do this right now” You sighed, rubbing your temple to calm yourself down.
“Well, you’re going to” He snaps, his tone and expression showing no sign of him joking. “I’m sorry that happened. Peter’s a jerk who feels threatened by you and your strength, but that was a complete violation of your privacy” Tobias starts, voice lowering until you could hear how sincere he was with each word.
You begin to feel the tears well up in your eyes, letting out a heavy breath as you try to blink them back. Tobias takes notice of this, reaching a hand to cup your face and turn you to face him. “You don’t give him the satisfaction of knowing he got to you. You don’t give him the chance to enjoy your upset, okay?” He affirmed, not even asking you but more like reminding you. You sniffed and nodded, licking your lips to try and steady your self.
“I- Um, I’m sorry about...” You trail off, not really knowing what you were apologizing for but you were sorry he’d gotten involved in all of this. Tobias gives you a confused look. His hand drops to the bench, using it to move closer to you. “You’re sorry I know that you love me?” He deadpans, making your cheeks burn with embarrassment. You wished that you could curl up into a ball and die at that exact moment.
You bit the inside of your cheek, raising your eyebrows for a second with no answer. “Most people are happy when they find out something like that” Tobias smirks amusingly at how shy you became. “Are you most people?” You ask quietly. “Depends, do you want me to be?”.
“Tobias I-” You groan and turn your head away from him in annoyance. But he doesn’t let you, bringing his hand up once more to turn you to face him. “Answer my question” He mumbles, his eyes briefly meeting your lips before going back up to your eyes. “Fine! Would it be the worst thing if I wanted you to be?” You blurt out and he grins lightly.
“See, ‘Atta girl. Knew you had it in you to say it” Tobias exclaims, smirking amusingly, making you turn even more red. “Would it?” You repeat quietly, and his expression changes seeing how you were beginning to overthink everything. His eyes bore into your eyes that were desperate for an answer, the silence killing you.
“No, No It wouldn’t” He murmurs before pulling you in to quickly push his lips against yours, catching you by surprise. His lips felt like heaven; they were soft yet the kiss was the most heat you’ve ever experienced in your life. Your lips move perfectly against his in this needy kiss, hands reaching up to tangle themselves in his hair.
His free hand slides up from the bench, to slip under your shirt and grip your waist, pulling you closer. The feeling of his cold palm against your skin, making goosebumps spread all over your body, the good kind. Both of you reluctantly pull away, but stay so close you were breathing each other’s air.
“Tobias, I-” You begin to say the unspoken words you’ve been keeping in since the day you met him, voice quiet but he cuts you off. Tobias’s eyes keep his gaze on yours, thumb rubbing circles on your bare stomach, “I know, Y/N, I do too”.
Slowly, you reach up and press your lips together once more. You didn’t want to worry about the consequences of this kiss, or the silent words you’ve just exchanged with each other. All you wanted to do was enjoy this moment with Tobias, pretend you two were the only two in the world, just for this moment.
