Thank u so much! These three are some of my faves to talk about.
-- Gil is a skilled liar in most situations, but he’s incapable of pretending to like a person he doesn’t like, or pretending to agree with a belief he doesn’t share. To do so, in his mind, would be to betray himself. That is something he cannot do, or will not -- even when the alternative means making enemies, losing friends, or sacrificing his own best interests.
More than once during the events of I&A, he does all three of those things rather than compromise his sense of integrity and personal truth. He doesn’t know any other way.
-- Theo adores her car, but she’s also fond of horses. She grew up on her family’s country estate in Connecticut and learned how to ride from a young age. Her Victorian mother, of course, wanted her to ride sidesaddle, but Theo predictably refused. She’d seen her older brothers learn to ride astride, and insisted that she be allowed to do the same. Her mother conceded...as she often did when she didn’t want to deal with Theo hounding her.
For her 14th birthday, Theo’s uncle bought her a horse of her own, a grey American Saddlebred gelding she named Uncanny.
-- Jon has one sibling, an older brother named Harcourt. They’ve hated each other practically since the moment Jon was born. Harcourt didn’t like having to share his mother’s attention with a younger brother, and quickly learned that if he acted out and caused problems, he could ensure that he would always be the center of attention in their family.
Jon was (believe it or not) a quiet and well-behaved child by comparison, but very emotionally neglected. He spent most of his time alone, even as a small child, and when he did act out he was chastised far more harshly than Harcourt, because his mother only had enough patience for one problem child. This, and the fact that Harcourt often taunted and teased him, fostered a bitter resentment toward his older brother that never went away.
